Tenisha Warner spoke publicly about her husband’s death first in a September 2025 social media post, then in a July 2026 interview with CBS Mornings. She said she initially focused on caring for their daughter, described the shock of the loss and explained why she had kept her grief private.
What Tenisha Warner said about the loss
In an interview with Gayle King for CBS Mornings, published July 23, 2026, Tenisha Warner recalled thinking first about her daughter and how she would continue as the child’s mother and only parent.
“All I could think about was my daughter and what I needed to do to continue to be her mother and be her only parent,” Warner told CBS Mornings.
She said she could not recall all the details of the day Malcolm-Jamal Warner died and thought her body had gone into shock: “I think … my body went through shock.”

Warner also described grief as part of everyday life. She said she feels the loss at home but cannot leave the home behind, and that for her and her daughter there is no “moving on.” Those are her account of her own family’s experience, not a universal prescription for grieving.
Why she waited to speak publicly
Warner’s first public statement came in September 2025, not immediately after her husband’s death. In a social media post, she said her grief felt sacred and that she needed to experience it on her own terms. Reflecting later on the response from people who had been touched by his work, she told King: “I realized that there was a world out there that he had touched in such powerful ways … that I wasn’t necessarily seeing because my grief was sacred to me and I needed to keep it mine.”

Her September post was also a remembrance and expression of thanks. She wrote, “Thank you for holding us in so much love during this tender time,” and recalled her husband’s commitment to children and families: “My husband believed deeply in tending not only to the inner light in children, but in ourselves.”
Her first statement also announced family projects
In the September 2025 post, Warner identified herself publicly and announced River & Ember and The Warner Family Foundation with her daughter. She described River & Ember as offering stories and rituals for the parent-child connection. The post’s announcement came alongside her remembrance of her husband; the later CBS interview focused on the first year of grief and parenting after his death.

What is known about Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s death
Malcolm-Jamal Warner died in Costa Rica in July 2025 at age 54. CBS News reported that Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department said he drowned at Cocles de Limón and appeared to have been pulled out by a current. The reported autopsy cause was asphyxiation by submersion. These details come from the official account reported by CBS, separate from Tenisha Warner’s comments about her grief.
