Malaak Compton-Rock and Chris Rock announced their separation in December 2014, after 19 years of marriage. Her public statement put their children’s well-being first and asked for privacy. Chris Rock later acknowledged infidelity and said he had hurt his family. The public record documents Compton-Rock’s philanthropy, civic work and writing; it does not establish how she feels about the divorce or whether she is “putting her life back together.”

What happened between Malaak Compton-Rock and Chris Rock?

On December 28, 2014, TIME reported the couple’s separation announcement and reproduced Compton-Rock’s statement. The report said Rock had filed for divorce; the announcement and the filing are distinct events. The TIME report described the marriage as lasting 19 years. The Los Angeles Times covered the announcement the following day.

In the statement, Compton-Rock wrote: “While recognizing that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life and their well-being is my top priority.” She also asked that the family’s privacy be respected. Her statement did not publicly explain why the marriage ended.

What did Chris Rock say about infidelity?

In 2017, Rock spoke publicly about infidelity and his conduct during the marriage. ABC News reported that he described believing, at the time, that being the family breadwinner gave him license to behave as he did, and acknowledged that he had hurt his family. ABC News’ report attributes those comments to Rock, not to Compton-Rock.

CBS News, reporting on Rock’s remarks to Rolling Stone, quoted him saying: “I wasn’t a good husband a lot of the times.” CBS News’ account is another record of Rock’s perspective. These later comments provide his public explanation of his own behavior; they do not amount to a complete account of the marriage from both former spouses.

What has Compton-Rock said about life after the separation?

The clearest statement from Compton-Rock in the sources available is the 2014 announcement: her children were her priority, and she wanted the family’s privacy respected. Rock spoke in 2015 about his own difficult days after the separation and said his daughters were doing well and lived nearby, according to The Guardian. His account describes his experience, not hers.

A HistoryMakers biography lists an interview with Compton-Rock dated August 27, 2025, but the listing does not provide a transcript or establish her current emotional circumstances. The available sources therefore do not support describing her as slowly recovering, rebuilding her life, or feeling a particular way about the divorce.

What does Malaak Compton-Rock do?

Compton-Rock is documented as a civic leader and philanthropist, with a record of nonprofit and service work. The HistoryMakers biography also identifies her as the author of the 2010 book If It Takes a Village, Build One: How I Found Meaning Through a Life of Service and 100 Ways You Can Too. The book is relevant background on her service work, not a divorce memoir or a guide to emotional recovery.
