Makeshift Music, etc. was a small independent label run by Mike Richards in Minonk, Illinois, from 1996 to 2003, according to the label’s own account. Its early releases were cassette albums recorded on a Yamaha MT50 four-track recorder; one documented example is Meadows, an instrumental project by Richards and Dustin Freeman released in 2001.
Which Makeshift Music does this refer to?
“Makeshift Music” is not a unique name. This article is about Makeshift Music, etc., the Minonk, Illinois label associated with Mike Richards—not other artists, podcasts, releases, or events that use the same phrase. The label’s Bandcamp page is the direct source for its account and catalog.
What is known about the label’s history?
The label says Richards began running Makeshift Music, etc. while in high school, from 1996 to 2003. Its account describes early albums recorded by Richards alone or with close friends in Minonk on a Yamaha MT50 four-track cassette recorder. These details come from the label’s own description; independent corroboration of the history is not established.
The label also says it later developed into Intangible Cat Musics and Arts, a collaboration with Eeffoc & Maps based in Washburn, Illinois. That is the label’s account of the connection, rather than a separately verified chronology.

What does the music sound like?
The available description points to a hands-on, small-scale recording approach rather than a single established genre. The clearest catalog example is Meadows, described on its release page as an instrumental tape-side project with “lo-fi 4-track cassette aesthetics.” The page credits all instruments and sounds to Dustin Freeman and Mike Richards.
Meadows: a documented release
Meadows was released on April 5, 2001. Its Bandcamp page lists a digital edition and a limited CDR edition, and provides streaming and download access. The release page is the best place to check current availability: physical stock and other catalog details can change.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the record label’s account does—and does not—establish
The available primary material supports a focused picture: a local label, a short stated operating period, cassette-based four-track beginnings, and a later collaboration named Intangible Cat Musics and Arts. It does not establish a complete discography, the label’s present activity, or a definitive account of its broader influence. Those claims should not be inferred from the surviving description or one release page.
