But a royalty rate is not a profit margin, and survey results from established indie authors are not a forecast for a new book. The practical lesson from successful authors is to understand the publishing terms, build a readership and catalog deliberately, and measure income after costs.
How do self-published authors make money?
Authors can earn royalties when readers buy eBooks. On Amazon, authors may also earn from pages read when a book is enrolled in KDP Select, which makes it available through Kindle Unlimited. KDP also supports print publishing, so an author can combine formats rather than rely on eBooks alone. Amazon describes KDP as a free publishing service, but that does not make producing or marketing a book cost-free.
Each route has different terms. A direct eBook sale pays according to the applicable royalty option and marketplace rules; page-read income depends on reading activity and the program’s terms. Wider distribution may suit an author who wants to sell through multiple retailers, while Select enrollment comes with conditions that should be checked before committing. There is no universally best route established by the available evidence.
How much does Amazon KDP pay per eBook?
Amazon offers a 35% and a 70% eBook royalty option. The percentage alone does not tell you the amount you will receive: the calculation, territory, eligibility and any applicable deductions matter. Amazon KDP’s eBook royalty rules explain the formulas and conditions.
#1 Best Overall
| Option | How the royalty is calculated | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 35% | 35% of list price, excluding VAT. | Applicable marketplace terms and any price matching. |
| 70% | For eligible sales, 70% of list price excluding applicable VAT and delivery costs. Sales outside specified territories receive 35%. | Eligibility, price requirements, territory, delivery costs and price matching. |
For Amazon.com, the 70% price band is $2.99–$12.99 effective July 7, 2026. Falling inside that band does not by itself make a book eligible: other requirements apply, and Brazil, Japan, Mexico and India have additional KDP Select conditions for 70% eligibility. Requirements can differ by marketplace and book, so check Amazon’s current eBook list-price requirements before setting a price.
How much money can you make self-publishing an eBook?
There is no dependable earnings figure for a new author in the evidence available here. Amazon’s royalty rules explain what eligible sales may pay, but they do not establish how many copies a particular book will sell. Income also varies with readership, genre, pricing, distribution, promotion and the size and engagement of an author’s catalog.

Survey figures describe respondents, not all self-published authors. Written Word Media’s 2025 Indie Author Survey received 1,346 responses from authors around the world. Its publisher says the sample skews toward serious, prolific indie authors, income is self-reported, and correlation does not establish causation. In that survey, 8% of respondents who answered reported making over $10,000 per month; this is not a typical-author forecast or a verified platform-wide earnings distribution. Read the 2025 survey and its qualifications.
A separate Written Word Media survey in 2024 reported that 46% of respondents earned $100 or less monthly from writing. That older, self-selected result should not be combined with the 2025 figure as though the surveys used directly comparable samples. Read the 2024 survey.

What can successful authors’ patterns teach you?
Survey patterns can suggest questions to investigate, but they cannot show that a particular tactic caused an author’s income. Written Word Media reported that the share of respondents naming Amazon as their top revenue source declined from 91% in 2023 to 87% in 2024 and 83% in 2025. Those are survey respondent patterns, not a measurement of every indie author or retailer.
The 2025 report also describes relationships between catalog size and income, while cautioning that correlation is not causation. A larger catalog may accompany higher earnings for some respondents, but publishing more titles is not a guaranteed income formula. A sustainable catalog still depends on readers wanting the books, sound production and a way to reach the audience.

Is Kindle Unlimited worth it for authors?
Kindle Unlimited is relevant through KDP Select: enrolled eBooks can earn page-read income as well as royalties on qualifying sales. The choice is a trade-off between that program and the distribution goals and enrollment conditions that apply to the book. Compare likely readership and your plans for other retailers with the current Select terms; the available evidence does not establish that enrollment is best for every author. See KDP’s service overview for its publishing and Select descriptions.

Gross royalties are not net profit. A book can earn royalties and still fail to repay its production and marketing expenses. Track income and costs separately for each title, and account for the value of your own time when deciding whether the project is sustainable.

- Marketing: advertising and promotion, including spending that does not generate a sale.
- Sales adjustments: refunds and the actual royalty calculation after applicable deductions.
- Other obligations: taxes and the time spent writing, publishing and managing the book.
For a useful estimate, start with the royalty rules for each marketplace and format, then subtract the expenses and obligations that apply to you. Do not treat a platform’s royalty percentage—or a survey respondent’s reported income—as your expected take-home amount.
How many books do you need to make a living?
There is no reliable number. A title count cannot establish income without information about sales, readership, pricing, costs and the author’s financial needs. Survey relationships between catalog size and income do not prove that adding books causes a particular result.
Instead, set a personal target based on the income you need and the costs you expect to incur. Review actual sales, page-read earnings, expenses and audience response over time, then decide whether to revise, promote, continue or expand the catalog. That approach replaces a universal book-count promise with evidence from your own publishing business.
