Some are directly documented in official franchise material; others are not established by the sources available here, so this list sticks to quotations that can be attributed without relying on remembered dialogue.
Ten memorable Captain Picard quotes
-
“Make it so.”
A defining Picard order, and the natural starting point for a list bearing its name. StarTrek.com calls it his “legendary order,” while noting that Riker and other characters have also used it; it is associated with Picard, but he did not originate or exclusively own the phrase. StarTrek.com’s discussion of the phrase makes the distinction clear.
-
“Engage!”
Picard’s crisp command to set the Enterprise in motion shows the decisiveness of his leadership. StarTrek.com contributor Amy Imhoff argues that a decisive tone is part of being in command, and discusses how Picard’s delivery and gesture reinforce his authority. Read Imhoff’s discussion of Picard’s command style.
-
“Make it so, Number One.”
This variation joins the order to Picard’s familiar form of address for Commander Riker. Its appeal is in the compact exchange it suggests: Picard makes the decision, and his trusted first officer is ready to carry it out. The wording appears in StarTrek.com’s TNG Classic Quotes feature.

-
“The line must be drawn here… this far, no further!”
Picard says this in Star Trek: First Contact, confronting the Borg. StarTrek.com describes the declaration as his “steadfast vow”: a flash of pain and frustration from a man who knows the enemy’s threat intimately. It is not a routine bridge command; its force comes from the personal history behind it. StarTrek.com connects the line to Picard’s struggle with the Borg.

Earl Grey, hot” was the favorite, the article reported “Make it so” as the winner. That is the result of that particular poll, not a universal or current ranking. See StarTrek.com’s poll report.
-
“Engage!” as a portrait of command
More than a catchphrase, the order distills Picard’s command presence: restrained until action is called for, then unmistakably decisive. Imhoff’s StarTrek.com essay treats the tone and gesture accompanying the command as part of how Picard communicates authority. Amy Imhoff’s essay on Picard’s style.

“Make it so” as a signature, not an exclusive phrase

What makes it a Picard signature is the association built by his use and delivery, rather than exclusive ownership of the words. StarTrek.com’s account.
-
“Tea, Earl Grey, hot” as everyday characterization
Unlike an order in a crisis, the tea request makes Picard memorable through a simple preference. Paramount+ identifies it as his replicator phrase, giving the quote its place among the franchise’s recognizable expressions. Paramount+’s feature.
