In 1899, he won the professional one-mile sprint championship in Montreal. Frederick Noland’s 2026 graphic biography, Major Taylor, brings that athlete and the discrimination surrounding his career to a new audience—but its publisher’s synopsis is not a substitute for reading the book itself.
Who was Major Taylor?
Born in Indianapolis in 1878, Marshall Walter Taylor entered cycling through work at a bicycle shop and went on to become a professional racer. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History describes him as the first African American world champion of any sport, while the official Major Taylor licensing site characterizes his 1899 achievement more narrowly as the first African American to win a major world championship in cycling. The specific category matters: the claim is about a recognized championship, not a timeless ranking of every athlete across sports and eras.
Taylor’s stature rested on racing results as well as fame. The Smithsonian says he was named National Cycling Champion by 1900 and toured overseas. His reputation as “the world’s fastest man” belongs to the era’s acclaim for a champion cyclist; it should not be read as a measurable comparison with athletes in other sports or periods.
What did Taylor win in 1899?
Taylor won the professional one-mile sprint championship in Montreal in 1899. The National Endowment for the Humanities’ account describes a close final: Taylor won by a wheel. It also reproduces the Montreal Star’s contemporary description of the race: “It was a beautiful sprint.” That phrase was the newspaper’s, not Taylor’s.

The result is a useful anchor for understanding why Taylor became celebrated. The championship was a specific sporting achievement, rather than simply a nickname or a later legend attached to him.
How did racism shape his career?
Taylor competed in a predominantly white sport and faced racial discrimination. The Smithsonian documents racism during his career. The publisher’s description of Noland’s book says it addresses racist abuse, attempts by cyclists to injure Taylor, and segregationist policies, including in San Francisco. Those details are part of the book’s stated subject; the synopsis alone does not independently verify every episode it describes.

His story is therefore not just a tale of succeeding despite adversity. It joins athletic achievement to the conditions under which he raced: who could compete, how rivals treated him, and how segregation constrained public life. Keeping those strands together gives a fuller account than either a list of records or an inspirational slogan can offer.
What is Frederick Noland’s Major Taylor about?
Penguin Random House lists Noland’s Major Taylor as a graphic biography published by Drawn & Quarterly. Its synopsis says the book follows Taylor’s records and international audience while setting his career against racism and the social changes of the bicycle era. That is the publisher’s description of the book, not a review based on an independent reading of its full contents.
