Mahanati is Nag Ashwin’s 2018 Telugu biographical film about actor Savitri, with Keerthy Suresh in the title role. Its Tamil-language release was titled Nadigaiyar Thilagam. The film follows Savitri’s rise and personal life, but, like any feature-length adaptation, it selects and compresses events rather than serving as a complete record.
What is Mahanati about?
The film tells a dramatized account of Savitri’s career and life, including her success and later difficulties. Its story is framed in part through journalist Madhuravani, played by Samantha Akkineni, and photographer Anthony, played by Vijay Deverakonda. This framing gives the feature a way to narrate Savitri’s story; it does not make the film a comprehensive biography.
Mahanati was released in Telugu, while its Tamil-language version used the title Nadigaiyar Thilagam. The Indian Express reported the theatrical release date as May 9, 2018.
Who stars in the film?
- Keerthy Suresh plays Savitri.
- Dulquer Salmaan plays Gemini Ganesan.
- Samantha Akkineni plays Madhuravani.
- Vijay Deverakonda plays Anthony.
Director Nag Ashwin later said that choosing Suresh was instinctive after seeing her in a Telugu film and the Tamil film Thodari. He recalled having to persuade both his team and Suresh to take on the role. Those comments describe the casting process, not an independent assessment of the performance.

Is Mahanati based on a true story?
Yes: it is a biographical feature about the real actor Savitri. But it should be understood as a dramatized selection of her life, not as a scene-by-scene historical record. Ashwin described the challenge of fitting a complicated life into a feature film. He said that the team chose films such as Devadasu and Mayabazar because they were iconic and important to Savitri’s career, while time constraints kept them from including every film or song they wanted.
In a May 8, 2018 interview with IANS for The Indian Express, Ashwin said, “The film is very honest. Whatever was going on in that period is what we have tried to reflect.” He also said, “That way, there’s no purposeful cinematic liberty in Mahanati. We have not forced any unnecessary things because there were enough highs and lows in her real story.” These are the director’s statements about his intentions; they are not independent verification that every scene or detail is historically exact.

How did the filmmakers build the period setting?
Ashwin described a production process that used decade-by-decade reference collections for Madras and Hyderabad. The costume team sourced garments and materials and commissioned handcrafted costumes for Savitri and Gemini Ganesan. The crew also tested how colors appeared in black and white, used period locations and props, and created visual extensions when contemporary buildings made location filming difficult.
Ashwin said that he and the producers aimed to give the film their best in casting and research. He described reading books, listening to Savitri’s radio shows and podcasts, asking assistant directors to collect information and film clippings, and watching her films. These details are the director’s account of the team’s methods; they do not establish that the resulting film exhaustively documents Savitri’s life.
