Magic: The Gathering’s February 18, 2025 first look at its FINAL FANTASY crossover offered a compact glimpse of the set’s visual approach: borderless character cards, summon art inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, and FINAL FANTASY illustrations featured on Magic cards. The set later launched on tabletop on June 13, 2025, bringing characters and moments from all 16 mainline FINAL FANTASY games into Magic.
What the first look showed
Square Enix’s February 18 announcement introduced the crossover’s visual identity and major product lines. It highlighted 55 legendary characters across three distinct treatments:
- Borderless Character Cards: character-focused artwork without the usual card border.
- Borderless Woodblock Cards: summon illustrations inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock paintings.
- FINAL FANTASY Through the Ages: FINAL FANTASY art applied to existing Magic cards through a bonus sheet.
The set’s attraction is not limited to familiar faces: the concept places characters, items, and moments from the series’ sixteen mainline games within Magic’s card-game framework.
February’s first look was not the full preview
The February announcement was an early visual and product reveal, not the crossover’s complete card-and-mechanics presentation. Wizards of the Coast showed additional cards and mechanics at PAX East in May 2025. Square Enix said that characters from every mainline game would appear in the set.

Wizards says that only 77 English Collector Boosters contain a serialized Traveling Chocobo card. That is a scarcity disclosure, not a reasonable expectation for an individual pack: Collector Boosters are randomized and do not promise a named card. Wizards also says non-serialized versions are mechanically identical.
