Wizards of the Coast officially announced Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit, a Universes Beyond set, and it released worldwide on August 14, 2026. The announcement’s exact social-media prompt has not been identified, so there is no basis to attribute a particular hint; the set itself is confirmed and available.
What is Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit?
Wizards describes the set as a journey through Middle-earth following Bilbo Baggins and his party toward the Lonely Mountain, with story elements including trolls, riddles in the dark, and Smaug. Wizards’ official announcement framed the crossover this way: “While it may not be an Unexpected Journey, we’re excited to announce that Magic is traveling back to Middle-earth for Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit.”
The release is a Universes Beyond entry: a Magic set built around a world outside Magic’s original setting. In this case, that world is J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth and the story of The Hobbit.
When and where can you play it?
The worldwide tabletop release date was August 14, 2026. Wizards also lists the set as available on MTG Arena. The official play page is the place to check current format and play information.

How did the story shape the set?
Wizards’ set design article explains that adapting a single book into a Magic set posed a different challenge from drawing on a larger franchise. The design team chose to bring back the Adventure subtype because it suited the story’s journey-oriented structure. That design choice connects the mechanics to the book’s framing as an adventure rather than treating the Middle-earth setting as decoration alone.
