Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY brings characters, creatures and stories from the mainline Final Fantasy games into a playable Magic set. That makes “a match made in Seventh Heaven” a fair description of the creative fit: both franchises build fantasy worlds around memorable characters, iconic objects and strategic choices. It is an editorial interpretation, not a claim that every fan approves.
What is Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY?
It is an officially licensed Universes Beyond collaboration developed by Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix. The tabletop set launched on June 13, 2025. Square Enix’s launch announcement said it would cover each main Final Fantasy game released up to that point, from the original through Final Fantasy XVI. Wizards’ current product page likewise describes characters and moments from sixteen mainline games. The collaboration is also playable on MTG Arena.
The main FIN set contains 309 cards, according to Wizards’ collecting guide. That count refers to the main set, not the separately identified FINAL FANTASY Commander (FIC) and FINAL FANTASY Through the Ages (FCA) card groups.
Why Final Fantasy and Magic fit together
Final Fantasy has a deep catalog of heroes, monsters, summons and signature items to draw from; Magic turns characters and objects into cards with rules and strategic roles. The set brings together figures such as Cloud, Terra, Lightning and Noctis, alongside familiar creatures including Chocobos and Behemoths. Instead of treating the crossover as a simple collection of references, its central appeal is the opportunity to encounter those worlds through Magic’s game system.

That connection is also how Square Enix framed the project. Shoichi Ichikawa, producer of the FINAL FANTASY series at Square Enix, said in the launch announcement: “At Square Enix, we are always seeking new ways to bring the rich lore and legacy of FINAL FANTASY to life.” He described the collaboration as a way to combine Final Fantasy storytelling with Magic’s strategic gameplay. That is the producer’s promotional perspective, not independent evidence of how audiences received the set.
How the cards work across Magic formats
Format legality depends on which product group a card belongs to. Wizards’ collecting guide lists the main FIN set as Standard legal. FINAL FANTASY Commander (FIC) and FINAL FANTASY Through the Ages (FCA) cards are listed as legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage; reprints retain any legality they already had. Check a card’s set code and current individual listing before building around it, since rules and bans can change.

A practical starting point for two players
The Starter Kit is the clearest beginner option in the official product information. It includes two 60-card decks, two deck boxes, a play guide, four double-sided tokens, two reference cards and Arena codes for both decks. Square Enix says account registration is required for the codes and that they expire September 1, 2030. It is designed to give two people a way to start playing without first building decks from individual cards.
