Reminiscences of the Nehru Age, M. O. Mathai’s 1978 memoir of his years serving Jawaharlal Nehru, has been described as banned. But the article that popularized that claim also says the circumstances are unclear; the available records here do not establish a formal order or the book’s legal status today. The memoir remains notable as an intimate, contested account—not as a verified record of every private claim it makes.

What book is the reported ban about?

The book is Reminiscences of the Nehru Age, written by M. O. Mathai, who served Jawaharlal Nehru, and published by Vikas Publishing House in 1978. The bibliographic record describes it as Mathai’s reminiscences of that service. Google Books lists a 299-page edition with ISBN 0706906217; Open Library records a Vikas edition. These catalogue entries identify the work, but do not establish that a copy is currently for sale or available in a particular library.

What does Mathai’s memoir contain?

Written after Nehru’s death, the memoir presents Mathai’s personal view of the Nehru years. Scroll’s 2016 account describes chapters on Nehru’s attitudes toward money, alcohol, his surroundings and women, alongside correspondence, anecdotes and recollections of political figures including Lord Mountbatten, C. Rajagopalachari, K. Kamaraj and Indira Gandhi. It also notes Mathai’s attention to his own place in the story.

Scroll quotes Mathai describing Nehru this way: “He was childlike in many ways and sometimes had to be treated like a child.” That line is Mathai’s characterization, not an independently established assessment. The same care applies to the memoir’s personal descriptions, criticisms and allegations about other people: attribute them to Mathai rather than presenting them as neutral fact.

Is the book actually banned in India?

The available account does not settle that question. In its 23 October 2016 article, Scroll calls the memoir banned but says that “the details of how Mathai’s book ended up being banned aren’t particularly clear.” The material available here does not identify a formal government or court order, the jurisdiction or terms of any restriction, or whether one remains in force. It therefore cannot support a definitive claim about the book’s legal status today.

Publication and catalogue records do not resolve the issue either. A listed edition or the existence of copies does not prove that no restriction was imposed; nor does a 2016 article’s description establish that a restriction exists now. The responsible conclusion is that the book has been reported as banned, while the legal basis and present status remain unestablished by these sources.

How should readers assess it as a historical source?

Mathai’s proximity to Nehru gives the memoir a distinctive vantage point on daily life and the political circle around the prime minister. But proximity alone does not verify every recollection. Scroll finds the book detailed and candid in places while also criticizing its rambling passages and Mathai’s tendency to cast himself as its hero.

  • Separate observation from judgment. A remembered exchange or habit is not the same as an author’s interpretation of someone’s character.
  • Keep sensitive claims attributed. Statements about private relationships or personal conduct should be described as Mathai’s claims, not facts established by the memoir’s existence.
  • Look for corroboration. For consequential claims, compare the memoir with independent records and accounts rather than treating a first-person narrative as conclusive.

That approach lets the book be read for its perspective without confusing memoir with independently verified biography.

Can readers find a copy?

The bibliographic records identify the 1978 Vikas Publishing House edition and ISBN 0706906217. Open Library lists possible buying routes, including Amazon, but that is not confirmation of a live listing, stock, price or condition. Check a current catalogue or retailer directly before relying on availability information.
