In Trap, the superhero connection is metaphorical: M. Night Shyamalan sees characters’ defining psychological traits as powers. He describes serial killer Cooper’s ability to compartmentalize and suppress emotion as one kind of power, while pop star Lady Raven’s openness and connection to others represent its opposite. In a July 30, 2024, io9 interview, Shyamalan also explained why he lets viewers know Cooper is the Butcher early and reflected on the connected universe he never deliberately planned.
What are the superhero inspirations in Trap?
Shyamalan’s superhero idea begins with character design, not costumes or extraordinary abilities. “There’s this one little thing about them that’s different and it causes them to have essentially like a superpower,” he told Germain Lussier of io9. In this sense, a psychological quality can function like a power: it shapes how a character moves through the world and what they can do.

Cooper’s power is compartmentalization
Cooper, the film’s protagonist and antagonist, can separate himself from emotion in a way that helps him function as the Butcher. Shyamalan frames that capacity as a distinctive trait with a dark practical effect. The film’s bright pop-concert setting intensifies the contrast between Cooper’s outward surroundings and the darkness of his actions.
Lady Raven’s counterpoint is connection
Shyamalan describes Lady Raven’s contrasting strength as her emotional openness and connection to other people. Rather than isolating herself, she relates to others. That opposition gives the conflict a philosophical dimension: the characters embody different ways of engaging with feeling and human connection.

Was Cooper’s identity meant to be a twist?
No. Shyamalan said the audience learns early that Cooper is the Butcher because that knowledge is the premise: he wanted viewers to experience the story from the serial killer’s position. In the interview, he recalled that the disclosure comes at about minute 11. That is his approximate recollection, not a separately verified runtime marker.
Shyamalan also described the intended tension of having Cooper serve as both protagonist and antagonist. He wanted viewers to root for him to escape while also wanting him caught. That is his account of the intended viewing experience, not a claim about how every audience member responds.

Does Trap connect to Shyamalan’s superhero films?
The interview does not present Trap as part of the Unbreakable trilogy or as a superhero crossover. Shyamalan said he enjoys inventing characters and reflected that if he had known he would make multiple films, he might have connected them into a larger universe. He described that as a hypothetical possibility, not a plan he had when making the films. At the time, he said, he was focused on persuading people to let him make his next movie.
Why does Trap have a mid-credits scene?
Shyamalan said a credits scene can sit outside a film’s main narrative while coloring it or suggesting another event taking place alongside it. He also noted that some production ideas emerge spontaneously and that he chose to shoot an unscripted idea for Trap. His explanation concerns the scene’s function and origin; it does not require revealing its content.
