Why did Lynyrd Skynyrd continue performing?
The band’s official history says members, along with the relevant families and estates, supported continuing live performances and keeping the music alive. It frames that choice within a longer history: after the 1977 plane crash, the band went on hiatus for ten years and returned in 1987 with Johnny Van Zant as lead singer.
The band’s official biography says Rossington hoped the music would continue to be performed. It quotes him describing the group’s wish for its songs to endure and remain in front of audiences. The history also quotes Van Zant: “The music they created, and the music we created, together since 1987, was always meant to be experienced LIVE.”
