Erik Menendez and O.J. Simpson reportedly became acquainted in 1994, when they were held in neighboring cells at Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail. Erik later recalled offering Simpson advice about keeping quiet about his case and dealing with media attention. The brothers had also reportedly met Simpson years earlier at a family dinner. These accounts come from Erik’s recollections and journalist Robert Rand’s reporting—not from the court opinions on either case.
How Erik Menendez and O.J. Simpson reportedly met in jail
After Simpson’s June 1994 arrest following the Bronco chase, he was held in a cell next to Erik Menendez at Men’s Central Jail, according to reporting by TheWrap and Robert Rand. TheWrap describes Simpson’s stay near Erik as lasting about a week, until he was moved.
Rand’s account, published by A&E as an excerpt from his book The Menendez Murders, says Erik recalled advising Simpson not to talk about his case with deputies or other inmates. Erik also reportedly wrote him a supportive letter, and the two spoke about the intense media attention surrounding them.
How long did they interact?
The accounts differ on duration. TheWrap says Simpson was moved after about a week, while Vanity Fair recounts Erik’s 2006 interview with Larry King, in which Erik described their interaction as continuing for “weeks and months.” The available accounts therefore support that they interacted, but do not establish a single precise duration. Rand’s account of what Erik said is a recollection reported by a journalist, not a transcript of conversations in the jail.

Did the Menendez brothers know Simpson before 1994?
They reportedly met him earlier, when they were children. Vanity Fair and Rand recount a family story in which their parents invited Simpson to dinner at the Menendez home. José Menendez was a Hertz executive, and Simpson appeared in Hertz advertising. This earlier meeting is presented in those accounts as a recollection, not as an independently verified record.
Why Erik objected to comparisons between the cases
As Simpson’s case unfolded, Los Angeles County District Attorney Gil Garcetti publicly compared the possible posture of Simpson’s defense with the Menendez case, according to Rand. Erik reportedly resented treating the cases as interchangeable; Rand attributes to him the reaction, “It was really aggravating.”

Erik later said he believed Simpson’s acquittal had a negative effect on the Menendez brothers’ retrial. That is Erik’s interpretation, not an established causal finding. The Associated Press reports that the brothers’ first trial ended in hung juries and that their 1995 retrial resulted in convictions; those outcomes do not by themselves show that Simpson’s acquittal caused the retrial result.
What the Netflix series gets right—and what remains dramatized
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story depicts a connection that has a basis in later reporting: Erik and Simpson were held near one another and reportedly interacted. TheWrap and Vanity Fair describe the series’ depiction as grounded in accounts including Erik’s recollections and Rand’s reporting.

That factual premise does not verify every scene. Specific dialogue, emotional exchanges, and the length or texture of their conversations should be treated as recollection or dramatization unless independently corroborated. The reported advice and letter are details attributed to Erik through Rand’s account, not a complete contemporaneous record of what happened.

For historical context, the Associated Press reported on August 20, 2025, that a judge had reduced the brothers’ sentences to 50 years to life in May 2025 and that both had since received three-year parole denials. That report is a dated snapshot; it does not establish their parole status in October 2026.
