Luigi Mangione’s reported Among Us sessions show, at most, that he shared a game with former college acquaintances. They do not show that the game influenced, caused or predicted the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. On September 30, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Mangione had pleaded guilty in connection with Thompson’s murder; the gaming anecdote is a separate, earlier detail, not an explanation of the crime.
What is the Among Us claim?
In a December 10, 2024 report, NBC News, republished by Yahoo News, attributed the detail to Alejandro Romero, a former University of Pennsylvania student who said he played Among Us with Mangione in a Discord group. That is an acquaintance’s recollection, not a police finding or a claim that the game was part of the criminal case.
Romero described his reaction after the arrest became public: “I just found it extremely ironic that, you know, we were in this game and there could actually be a true killer among us.” The remark expresses how the coincidence struck him afterward. It is not evidence of Mangione’s motives. NBC News report republished by Yahoo News
What does the game involve?
Among Us is a social deduction game: players try to identify an impostor among the group. That fictional premise helps explain why the phrase “killer among us” can sound striking when placed beside news of a real killing. But a game’s rules and a player’s real-world conduct are different things. The reported session does not establish a meaningful connection between the two.

Some coverage used language such as “assassins” or called Among Us a “video game killer.” Those descriptions frame the story; they do not demonstrate that the game shaped or foreshadowed the crime. PC Gamer’s commentary on the framing and 404 Media’s commentary address the way the anecdote was presented.
What does the detail establish—and what doesn’t it?
- It establishes a limited social detail: Romero recalled playing Among Us with Mangione in a Discord group.
- It does not establish a motive: Romero’s ironic reaction came after the arrest became public and says nothing reliable about what Mangione intended.
- It does not establish causation or prediction: The game’s impostor mechanic is not evidence that playing it influences or forecasts real-world violence. The sources cited here provide no relevant statistic showing that it does.
- It does not make the game part of the legal evidence: A New York court decision concerns the criminal case and seized evidence, but does not make this Among Us anecdote part of its evidentiary account. New York State Unified Court System decision, May 18, 2026
How does it fit with Mangione’s broader interest in games?
The Associated Press separately reported that Mangione helped start a gaming and game-design club at Penn and interned at Firaxis. That provides background about his interest in games, but it does not connect Among Us—or gaming generally—to the crime. Associated Press background report, December 2024

Why keep the anecdote in perspective?
A striking coincidence can invite a story that the evidence does not support. Here, the documented chain is modest: Romero recalled a shared game, then described the coincidence as ironic after the arrest became public. Turning that sequence into a theory about motive would go beyond what the recollection can show.
