Lucky Bay was named No. 1 in the 2023 edition of The World’s 50 Best Beaches, according to Tourism Western Australia. The agency said the results were collated from votes by more than 2,000 travel professionals. That is a dated ranking—not a permanent or scientific declaration that Lucky Bay is objectively the world’s best beach. For visitors, it is a beach in Cape Le Grand National Park with day-use access, camping that must be booked ahead, and optional beach driving for which a 4WD is recommended.
Is Lucky Bay really the world’s best beach?
“No. 1” refers to Lucky Bay’s position in the 2023 edition of The World’s 50 Best Beaches, as reported by Tourism Western Australia on 18 May 2023. The agency said more than 2,000 travel professionals voted to collate the results. Its announcement does not provide a detailed scoring breakdown, so the ranking is best understood as the result of that list’s voting process, not as a universal measure.
Tourism WA’s announcement quoted Marcus Falconer, CEO of Australia’s Golden Outback, praising the beach’s white sand and southern coastline. It also quoted Esperance Island Cruises’ Jaimen Hudson describing the region’s beaches and turquoise water. These are promotional comments attributed by the state tourism agency, rather than scientific assessments.
Where is Lucky Bay, and what is the day-use access like?
Lucky Bay is within Cape Le Grand National Park near Esperance, on Western Australia’s south coast. Park entry fees apply. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) lists a sealed parking area beside the picnic area, beach-user access, accessible parking and toilets. Dogs are not permitted in the park. Check DBCA’s Lucky Bay park information for current access details and closures before travelling.

Accessibility
DBCA describes designated accessible parking, firm and reasonably level pedestrian access, and wheelchair-accessible toilets reached from the day-use parking area by a concrete path. For individual access requirements or changing site conditions, contact DBCA before your visit.
Can you camp at Lucky Bay?
Yes. Lucky Bay Campground has unpowered sites, and bookings are essential. DBCA allows bookings up to 180 days before arrival through its Park Stay booking service. The campground does not provide drinking water. DBCA warns that any untreated water supply is not guaranteed and must be treated, so do not plan to rely on campground water. National park campground campfires are not permitted.

Do you need a 4WD to visit or drive on Lucky Bay?
No 4WD is needed for the ordinary day-use visit: the sealed parking area provides beach access. Driving onto the sand is a separate, optional activity. The Shire of Esperance beach guide recommends a 4WD for beach driving and notes that the sand gets softer farther from the entrance. It advises reducing tyre pressure as conditions require. That guidance is for driving on the beach, not for reaching the day-use parking area.

Beach weed and gutters can vary with the season and storm events, according to DBCA’s Lucky Bay Beach information. The gathered official and local sources do not establish current patrols, surf conditions, water conditions, or a safest place to swim. Check current local conditions and official updates on the day rather than assuming the beach is patrolled or conditions are suitable.
