His sister Aarti had spent her life alongside him; she describes him as social and clear about wanting a relationship, a family, a career and a degree. Other families tell different stories: the Smiths describe a close sibling bond and a family that did not know every detail of filming, while Michael Theo’s pre-show life included work at a kitchen-cabinet factory and hopes of acting. These accounts are distinct family histories, not a template for autistic people or their siblings.
What was life like for Subodh Garg and his sister before the show?
In an Easterseals interview published April 30, 2024, Aarti Garg says she is three years younger than her brother Subodh and has never known life except as his sister: “I’ve known nothing else, than being his sister, basically.” Her perspective is that of a sibling who has known him across changing stages of life, not someone encountering him through television.

Aarti describes Subodh as social and wanting to be around people. She says he hoped for connection, marriage and a family, along with a career and a degree. Her account challenges the assumption that autistic people all have the same social preferences or ambitions: these are Subodh’s wishes as she understands them.
Dating was a continuing challenge for Subodh
Aarti said, “Dating was a huge struggle before the show, and it’s still kind of a struggle now.” That is her description of Subodh’s experience specifically, not a claim about every participant. In the same interview, Subodh discusses online dating and past relationships. The series gave viewers a window into his dating journey, but it did not make the difficulty disappear.

How did the Smith family describe Tanner and his sister Midge?
A July 9, 2025 Unplanned Podcast conversation brings together Tanner Smith, his mother Nicci and his younger sister Midge. Family members describe Midge as a comfort and support to Tanner. Their account presents sibling closeness as part of their family life without suggesting that Midge was responsible for his care or choices.
The family’s living arrangements also differed from Michael Theo’s. Tanner lived apart from the family home, so his relatives were not necessarily present for every part of filming. Nicci says they watched the series when the public did and did not know who Tanner’s date would be. Their experience shows that relatives may support a participant while still learning about some moments from the finished program.

What was Michael Theo’s life like before television?
Michael Theo’s story is a different kind of pre-show portrait. ABC News’ Australian Story profile, published September 30, 2024, reports that Michael was 25, lived with his parents in suburban Wollongong and worked sanding doors at a kitchen-cabinet factory while hoping to become an actor.
The profile says Michael was non-verbal as a child and was formally diagnosed with Asperger’s at eight; it notes that the term is now called autism. His mother, Vanessa, describes using his interest in animated films and cartoons to encourage communication. The story also recounts difficult high-school years and Michael comparing himself with his younger brother Adam. This is primarily Michael’s biography, rather than an interview focused on Adam’s experience as his sibling.

How did Connor Smith’s family decide to support his participation?
In an April 14, 2025 Atlanta Journal-Constitution profile, Lise Smith describes weighing the family’s public exposure before supporting her son Connor’s participation. She said, “I hit pause and called a family meeting.” Lise said Connor wanted to do the show and had expressed loneliness; she also acknowledged the fear involved in putting a family into public view. Her account describes one family’s decision, while preserving Connor’s own interest in taking part.
After viewers began asking questions, Lise and her daughter Nicci launched the podcast Talk to Me, Sis on March 1, 2025. The AJC reported more than 1,000 downloads and 177 YouTube subscribers at the time its profile was published. Those are historical audience figures from April 2025, not current totals.

Together, these accounts show different ways family relationships and circumstances intersected with life before the series: Aarti’s lifelong view of Subodh’s goals and dating difficulties; Midge’s place in Tanner’s family life; and Adam’s presence in Michael’s story. The families also had different living arrangements and different levels of knowledge about filming. None of these interviews establishes a single typical experience for autistic people, siblings or families appearing on reality television.
A separate March 24, 2026 episode page from We Need To Talk describes Abbey Romeo and her mother Christine discussing isolation, feeling misunderstood, communication struggles, school, and the point when Abbey understood her diagnosis. The page offers a summary and chapter list rather than a full transcript, so it provides additional context about Abbey’s life before television, not a basis for quoting her conversation verbatim.
