ITV has described screening, training, filming and aftercare procedures for Love Island contestants, but its public statements do not establish an official list of exactly 24 rules. Some details are tied to particular series: for example, ITV announced a social-media pause for the 2023 series, while its published aftercare figures come from a 2022 protocol. The measures below distinguish ITV’s published practices from Ofcom’s broader rules for UK broadcasters.
Who sets the rules—and how current are they?
There are two different layers. ITV and the production set contestant procedures and describe support measures; Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code sets general duties for broadcasters. Ofcom does not publish a Love Island-specific list of 24 contestant rules.
ITV’s releases from 2022 and 2023 document what it said it asked of or offered participants at those times. ITV says its protocols are reviewed and evolve ahead of each series, so a season-specific announcement is the best evidence for whether a particular measure still applies. The public releases are not the full contestant contract and do not independently verify implementation or outcomes.
What ITV has publicly described before contestants enter
Screening and disclosure
In its 2022 protocol, ITV described pre-filming medical and psychological assessments, involving an independent doctor, a psychological consultant and reports from each prospective Islander’s GP. Candidates were asked to disclose relevant medical history in confidence. These are ITV’s published descriptions of its process, not a guarantee that every later series used identical procedures. Explaining participation and its implications
ITV said candidates received verbal and written explanations of the possible positive and negative implications of taking part, reinforced in the contract. It advised them to discuss participation with family and close contacts. The public statement does not reveal confidential contract language or every contractual obligation.
Briefing on villa life and the transition home
For the 2023 series, ITV described a pre-entry video led by the Executive Producer and Head of Welfare. Former Islanders discussed the two weeks before entry, being filmed around the clock, interactions with producers, family support, trolling and the transition home. This briefing is intended to prepare candidates for the experience; ITV’s statement does not set out every detail of the filming environment or production rules.

Training and conduct guidance
Relationships, respect and inclusion
ITV said Islanders complete video training and guidance on mutually respectful relationships, patterns associated with controlling and coercive behaviour, disability, sexuality, race and ethnicity, and microaggressions. The same release describes guidance on inclusive language and behaviour, safe spaces and allyship. These are production training topics described by ITV, not a published catalogue of punishable infractions. ITV’s 2023 protocol announcement
Social-media activity during the series
In May 2023, ITV said it had formally introduced a guideline asking participants to pause their social-media handles and accounts while they were on the show, to help protect Islanders and their families from adverse effects. ITV framed this as a 2023 policy; its announcement alone does not confirm the arrangement for every later series.

The policy also addressed people managing Islanders’ accounts while contestants were away. Series 5 Islander Amy Hart told ITV that her best friend had managed her social media and had to read threatening and abusive messages while she was in the villa. Her account illustrates why a pause could be intended to protect people beyond the contestants, but it is an individual experience rather than evidence of how often abuse occurs.
Preparing for public attention and practical changes
ITV’s releases also describe guidance on social-media impacts and handling negativity, financial-management training, conversations about taking part, and advice about management after the show. The statements do not establish a universal rule about who may represent a contestant, nor do they disclose detailed financial or management terms.

Support during filming and after the show
Welfare support during production
ITV’s 2022 protocol described a registered mental-health professional engaged from pre-filming through aftercare, a dedicated welfare team and Mental Health First Aid training for senior staff on the ground. These are support arrangements ITV said it had put in place; they should not be read as claims about results or as assurances that every participant will have the same experience.
Therapy and follow-up described in ITV’s 2022 protocol
ITV said returning Islanders would be offered a minimum of eight therapy sessions and receive proactive contact for 14 months after their series ended, with additional help where applicable. Those figures describe the offer in ITV’s May 2022 publication; they are not verified here as unchanged for every subsequent season. A stated service commitment is not evidence, on its own, of treatment outcomes or effectiveness.

What Ofcom requires of broadcasters
Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code provides general UK standards for fairness, informed consent and contributor welfare. It says broadcasters must take due care over people who may face significant harm and should explain relevant welfare risks and mitigation. Ofcom identifies factors that can heighten risk in reality programming, including intense media attention, constructed environments, conflict, emotional challenges, vulnerability and disclosure of sensitive or private matters. The care expected should be proportionate to the risk. Ofcom’s Section Seven guidance
On fairness and consent, Section Seven says contributors should normally be told, at an appropriate stage, about a programme’s nature and purpose, the contribution expected of them, likely broadcast details where known, and their contractual rights and obligations. This is general Code guidance for broadcasters, not a Love Island-specific contestant rule. Ofcom’s duties also should not be confused with ITV’s own training, screening or support procedures.
What the public record does—and does not—establish
| Measure or standard | Who described it | Timing and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Pause social-media handles and accounts | ITV | Guideline announced for the 2023 series; later-season status is not established by that announcement. |
| Pre-filming medical and psychological assessments, including confidential medical-history disclosure | ITV | Described in ITV’s 2022 protocol; identical later-season procedures are not confirmed here. |
| Relationship, inclusion and online-negativity guidance | ITV | Topics described in ITV’s 2023 release; the release does not provide a complete conduct code. |
| Minimum of eight therapy sessions and 14 months of proactive contact | ITV | Offers described in ITV’s May 2022 protocol for returning Islanders; not verified as unchanged for later series. |
| Welfare, fairness and informed-consent duties | Ofcom | General UK Broadcasting Code guidance and obligations, not a Love Island-only list of contestant rules. |
Because ITV’s publicly available releases are summaries rather than the complete contract or a definitive current rulebook, they cannot support a reliable count of exactly 24 rules. The strongest account is a dated one: ITV has described procedures spanning preparation, filming and aftercare, while Ofcom sets a separate regulatory framework for broadcasters.
