Season 8 spoiler: Lauren O’Brien believes Dave Bettenburg used a dispute about her pre-show hookup as an excuse to end their engagement because he was not ready to marry. That is Lauren’s interpretation of his motive, not an established fact. Dave later offered a different account of what he had heard about Lauren—and said key claims were fabricated.

What sparked the breakup dispute?

After Lauren and Dave returned to Minneapolis from their honeymoon and regained access to their phones, Dave learned that Lauren had briefly been seeing a man who shared mutual friends with him, according to Lauren’s February 2025 interview with Elite Daily. Lauren described the connection as casual. The issue became a source of conflict before the couple’s planned weddings.

The couple’s split aired in Episode 11, roughly a week and a half before the weddings, according to Elite Daily’s account. The on-screen timing establishes when their relationship ended in the season; it does not, by itself, establish why Dave made that choice.

Why Lauren thinks Dave was looking for an excuse

Asked whether it seemed Dave was looking for an excuse to end the relationship, Lauren said she understood that interpretation. “I think he wanted to find an excuse to get out that didn’t involve him not being ready,” she told Elite Daily. She viewed the dispute as a way for him to leave without admitting he was unprepared for marriage.

Lauren also said the man’s ties to Dave and their shared social circle made the situation feel especially close to home. In her view, the issue itself was “very minuscule,” and she said, “I don’t think he loved me enough to look past” it. Those remarks explain her assessment of the relationship; they do not verify Dave’s private motivation.

What Dave later said he had been told

Netflix Tudum’s later Season 8 cast retrospective adds Dave’s account. He said his sister and best friends had passed along reports about Lauren at the time. He also said the outside man had claimed that he and Lauren had been dating for months and that she had slept at his place the night before the pods.

Dave later said those claims were fabricated: “I just learned that he fabricated that whole thing.” This is Dave’s retrospective statement, not an independently verified finding. It also differs from the brief, casual pre-show connection described in Lauren’s interview. The accounts should not be collapsed into a single settled version of events.

What each account establishes—and what it doesn’t

  • On-screen chronology: The couple’s breakup appears in Episode 11, before their planned weddings. Elite Daily places it about a week and a half before those ceremonies.
  • Lauren’s interpretation: She believes Dave was not ready to marry and treated the hookup dispute as an exit. That is her reading of his motive.
  • Dave’s retrospective account: He said people close to him relayed claims about Lauren and later said the outside man fabricated key details. These are Dave’s statements, not independently adjudicated facts.

Where Lauren and Dave stood after filming

Lauren told Netflix Tudum she never met Dave’s sister. In the Elite Daily interview, she joked, “I still don’t know who exists and who doesn’t,” referring to not meeting his sister or friends. She said Dave did not follow up after filming in a way that built the emotional connection she would need to continue the relationship. For future relationships, she said, “A partner who is a teammate is one of my non-negotiables.”
