Spoilers for the Love Is Blind season 6 finale: Clay Gravesande said his decision to turn down AD Smith at the altar came from doubts about whether he could follow through on marriage, shaped in part by what he had seen in his parents’ relationship. In a March 6, 2024 interview with PEOPLE republished by Yahoo Entertainment, he said he was not ready to marry and still needed to work on himself.
Why Clay said no to AD at the altar
Clay and AD reached the season 6 wedding ceremony, where Clay declined to say “I do.” He told PEOPLE that he did not think it was responsible to marry when he was uncertain, while also telling AD, “I want you to know that I’m rocking with you.” He described the decision as a question of readiness rather than a claim that he did not care about her.
Looking back on the commitment, Clay said: “So I think for me, I made the commitment, but when I was actually in it, I was like, ‘Can I really do this?’ So it was a lot of self-doubt coming through.”
His explanation was his own account of what he was feeling at the time. It does not establish one definitive cause for his decision or amount to a clinical assessment.

What Clay said about his parents’ marriage
Clay linked his doubts to his family history. He said his parents had been married for 24 years and that he had seen his father have “some infidelity moments.” He summarized the connection this way: “And so I think what you’re seeing is a moment of self-doubt, based off how I was raised.”
That is how Clay described the influence of what he witnessed; it should not be read as proof that he would repeat his father’s behavior or that his parents’ marriage alone determined his choice. The interview reports Clay’s perspective, not an independent account of his family history.

The everyday relationship pressures he described
Clay also spoke about practical adjustments in the relationship, including his allergy to AD’s dog, his work schedule, and the couple’s arrangements between their townhouse and his home. He said the dog was often in his face, though he loved it, and that the logistics could be difficult.
He said things improved when AD began staying at his home and joining him at the lake. In his interview, he described these details as part of the couple’s experience, not as a complete explanation for his decision at the altar.

What Clay and AD said later at the reunion
In 2024 reunion coverage, Clay said he had made a mistake by going to the altar and saying no. He also described AD as “the love of my life” and said he had begun therapy. Those were later comments, separate from his March interview explanation.
AD’s response is distinct from Clay’s account. The reunion report said she found the conversation between Clay and his parents clarifying. In the original interview, she also said she did not want to continue dating after his rejection. These reports document their comments in 2024 and do not establish their relationship status today.
