Ke Huy Quan’s first leading feature role arrived after a career that had already spanned four decades and included an Oscar win. In the 2025 action-comedy Love Hurts, he plays a fictional Milwaukee realtor whose violent past catches up with him. Quan has said he wants audiences to see him as an actor who does action well—not simply as an action star.
How Love Hurts became a milestone for Quan
Quan described Love Hurts as his first time leading a film, a milestone in a 40-year acting career. In a January 2025 report, CNA Lifestyle quoted him reflecting on the change: “I never thought I would one day see a trailer with the Universal Studios logo before it, and then the movie be advertised with my name.” CNA attributed its interview material to Empire magazine.

The role followed Quan’s Oscar-winning return to acting in Everything Everywhere All at Once. But Love Hurts is not a story about Quan’s life: he plays Marvin Gable, a mild-mannered realtor in Milwaukee whose former partner in crime, Rose, returns and draws him into a conflict with his crime-lord brother, Knuckles. Universal describes the film as an action-comedy directed by Jonathan Eusebio.
What Quan has said about action and martial arts
Quan has expressed interest in action work while resisting a label that would define his whole career. CNA quoted him saying: “I don’t want to be perceived as an action star. I hope I’m perceived as an actor who does action well.”

That distinction matters in Love Hurts: the action is part of a character performance, not evidence that Quan is presenting himself as a martial-arts specialist. Universal’s home-entertainment materials document a training regimen with the 87North stunt team in the featurette “The Ke to Gable,” and describe “Stunts Hurt” as a look at making the film’s fight sequences. Those materials establish stunt and fight preparation for this production, but do not identify a particular martial-arts discipline or credential for Quan.
How the Oscar connects to one fight scene
A UPI search-result summary reported that director Jonathan Eusebio connected Quan’s attachment to his hard-won Everything Everywhere All at Once Oscar with a Love Hurts scene in which Marvin risks his life to protect his “real estate agent of the year” award. The underlying UPI page was unavailable to verify the fuller account, so this should be understood as a reported explanation from the director, not as a confirmed verbatim interview quotation.

What to expect from the film
The Associated Press review describes elaborate choreography and violent comic set pieces, while criticizing the film’s tone and pacing. That is critic Lindsey Bahr’s assessment, not a measure of universal audience reaction. AP lists the film at 83 minutes and gives its US rating as R for strong, bloody violence and language throughout.
Universal’s official page rounds the theatrical-era runtime to 1 hour 30 minutes. Its home-entertainment technical sheet gives the more exact figure of 01:23:09. These are source-specific presentations of the runtime, rather than a reason to treat the film as having two different cuts.

Where to watch or find Love Hurts
Universal lists 4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital, Blu-ray + Digital, and DVD editions. Its February 24, 2025 press release announced an April 1 US physical-media street date; the US 4K UHD UPC is 191329279052. The press release also advertises bonus features and an alternate ending for selected purchases, so check the specific edition and retailer listing for what is included.
Peacock announced that Love Hurts would begin streaming exclusively on the service on May 9, 2025. That is the announced launch date, not confirmation that it remains available now or in every territory; check the local service catalog for current access.
