The Academy delayed the 97th Oscars nominations announcement in January 2025 as Los Angeles-area fires remained active. It extended nominations voting through January 17 and moved the announcement to January 23; the Oscars ceremony itself remained set for March 2, 2025.
Why were the Oscar nominations postponed?
On January 13, 2025, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced changes to the 97th Oscars season schedule because of the Los Angeles-area fires. The Academy said the fires were still active and that extending voting would give members additional time. It also cited sensitivity to the region’s infrastructure and lodging needs in the weeks ahead. The announcement did not quantify the fires’ effect on voting or say that every Academy member was personally affected.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang said: “Due to the still-active fires in the Los Angeles area, we feel it is necessary to extend our voting period and move the date of our nominations announcement to allow additional time for our members.” They also said the Academy intended to honor frontline workers, recognize people affected by the fires, and encourage support for relief efforts. The Academy’s January 13 announcement contains the schedule changes and its explanation.
When were the nominations announced after the delay?
The Academy extended nominations voting through Friday, January 17, 2025, at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. It rescheduled the nominations announcement for Thursday, January 23, at 5:30 a.m. Pacific Time. The announcement was planned as a virtual event, without in-person media coverage.

What other Oscars events changed?
- The nominees luncheon scheduled for February 10, 2025, was cancelled.
- The Scientific and Technical Awards, then scheduled for February 18, were moved to a later date that had not yet been determined when the Academy announced the changes.
Were the Oscars ceremony postponed too?
No. The Academy said the 97th Oscars ceremony remained scheduled for Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The January changes delayed the nominations announcement and altered other season events; they did not change the ceremony date in that announcement.
