Lorde’s fourth album, Virgin, trades much of Solar Power’s relaxed drift for sharp electronic rhythms and a candid portrait of a self still in motion. Its best moments make that exposure feel inseparable from the music: drums and synths turn private uncertainty into something bodily and communal. The record’s contrast between propulsive songs and more inward passages gives it shape, though the emotional openness can feel more compelling than the album’s cohesion.
What does Virgin sound like?
Released June 27, 2025, Virgin is an eleven-track, 34-minute album. Apple Music describes it as a move away from the New Age chill of Solar Power toward beats; that shift is audible in the album’s emphasis on rhythm, pressure and physical momentum. The Guardian, reviewing it on June 26, singled out electronics that chatter and throb, large choruses, and a mix of bangers and ballads. The Associated Press, writing on release day, likewise characterized the pop as raw and physical. Those are critics’ readings, not a universal verdict, but together they point to an album that wants to be felt as much as decoded.
The production has more than one texture. Lorde told GRAMMY.com that Jim-E Stack’s drums were a major sound across the record, Buddy Ross contributed distinctive synth parts, and guitarist Andrew Aged played on six or seven songs. Official Charts also lists Dev Hynes among the collaborators. The interplay matters: the drums push songs forward, while synth and guitar keep the sound from collapsing into a single hard-edged electronic surface.
Apple Music notes that these songs were written between 2023 and 2025 and that this is Lorde’s first album since her 2013 debut not co-written and co-produced by Jack Antonoff. That context helps explain why Virgin feels like a change in working texture, but it does not make the album a clean break from her earlier work. Its choruses still seek release; what changes is how directly the production puts the body in the foreground.

What is Lorde’s Virgin about?
The album works as a self-portrait rather than a neatly resolved statement. Apple Music describes it as Lorde without edits or apologies and reproduces her image for it: “Kind of like a photo of yourself that you don’t love, but captures something true about you.” The awkwardness in that comparison is useful. Virgin does not present self-knowledge as polish; it dwells in the gap between what a person sees and what they can accept.
Gender, embodiment, grief and desire are productive ways to read the album, not a checklist that makes every song mean the same thing. The Associated Press, for example, connects “Favourite Daughter” with gender experience and “Current Affairs” with sexual autonomy. Those interpretations show how the record’s private perspective can open onto larger questions without turning the songs into essays. Its candor is most affecting when a detail or mood remains unresolved rather than being explained away.

Do the songs and sequencing cohere?
The album’s central tension is between propulsion and exposure. The Guardian’s description of big choruses alongside ballads captures a real structural contrast: some songs aim for release through force and repetition, while others leave more room for vulnerability. That variety gives the short record breathing space, but it also means the listening experience is not one uninterrupted surge. The shifts are part of its argument: a person can project confidence in one moment and feel unsteady in the next.
The track sequence moves from “Hammer” and “What Was That” through “Shapeshifter,” “Man of the Year,” “Favourite Daughter,” “Current Affairs,” “Clearblue,” “GRWM,” “Broken Glass,” and “If She Could See Me Now,” before closing with “David.” The ordering gives the album a passage through changing self-images rather than a simple pile-up of singles. The strongest songs are those where the beat does emotional work—making desire, unease or self-assertion tangible—rather than merely furnishing a dramatic backdrop. On that measure, Virgin is often persuasive, though not every transition makes its different modes feel like parts of one continuous statement.

How does Virgin compare with Solar Power and Melodrama?
Compared with Solar Power, Virgin is more rhythm-led and visceral. Apple Music explicitly contrasts the earlier album’s relaxed sound with the newer record’s beats, a distinction that describes the broad direction without implying that one simply corrects the other. The quieter, more spacious mood of Solar Power and the bodily insistence of Virgin reflect different artistic priorities.
It is tempting to call the new album a return to Melodrama because it brings back electronic energy and oversized choruses. That comparison is incomplete. Virgin shares a taste for pop impact, but its stated and critical frame is raw self-portraiture, not merely a reprise of an earlier album’s emotional world. Its value lies in how it makes that difference audible: the pulse is familiar in broad outline, while the perspective is less interested in presenting a perfectly composed version of the self.
