Spoiler warning: This guide names the Fool pathway’s progression through Sequence 0, the system’s highest rank. It explains the basic terms first, but the upper ranks may reveal story developments.
Lord of the Mysteries has 22 standard Beyonder pathways, each with ten Sequences, numbered from Sequence 9 at the entry level down to Sequence 0 at the top. That makes 220 pathway-and-rank positions in total. The key to reading the system is that a pathway is the route, while a Sequence is a rank on that route.
What are Beyonders, pathways, and Sequences?
- Beyonder: A person who has entered the supernatural progression system.
- Pathway: A progression track for Beyonders. Different pathways have different abilities and themes.
- Sequence: A rank within a pathway. Sequence 9 is the entry rank; the numbers descend as a Beyonder advances, with Sequence 0 at the summit.
These terms describe different things: a Beyonder follows a pathway, and their Sequence indicates their position on it. The system has 22 standard pathways, each running from Sequence 9 to Sequence 0.
How does Sequence numbering work?
The numbering can seem backward if you expect higher numbers to mean higher rank. In this system, Sequence 9 is the beginning and Sequence 0 is the highest level. Each pathway has ten ranks, counting both endpoints.

#1 Best Overall
| Rank position | Sequence number | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | 9 | Beginning of the pathway |
| Intermediate | 8 through 1 | Ranks between entry and the top |
| Highest | 0 | Top rank of the pathway |
Across 22 pathways, ten ranks each produce 220 pathway-and-Sequence positions. That is a count of positions, not a claim that every name appears in the novel itself.
What does one pathway look like?
The Fool pathway
The Fool pathway provides a clear example of the descending numbering. Its names, from entry rank to highest rank, are:
Rank #2
- Sequence 9: Seer
- Sequence 8: Clown
- Sequence 7: Magician
- Sequence 6: Faceless
- Sequence 5: Marionettist
- Sequence 4: Bizarro Sorcerer
- Sequence 3: Scholar of Yore
- Sequence 2: Miracle Invoker
- Sequence 1: Attendant of Mysteries
- Sequence 0: The Fool
The names show why “Sequence” alone is not enough to identify a rank: each pathway has its own sequence of names. “Sequence 9” means the entry rank across the system; “Seer” is the name of that rank on the Fool pathway.

A full chart needs 220 names, organized by pathway and rank. The Lord of the Mysteries Wiki pathway reference is a fan-maintained compilation, not an official publisher database. It notes that the novel did not spell out every Sequence name: the author posted additional names later, and Circle of Inevitability subsequently confirmed most of them. A chart should distinguish names established in the novel from names supplied or confirmed outside it.
The official YUEWEN franchise overview identifies Lord of Mysteries as a completed novel, but its accessible overview does not provide a complete Sequence chart. The available source material establishes the 22-by-10 structure and the Fool pathway example above; it does not independently verify every name across the other 21 pathways. For that reason, this guide does not present an unverified 220-name roster as definitive.

What should a beginner remember?
- There are 22 standard pathways.
- Each pathway has ten Sequence ranks.
- Sequence 9 is the entry rank; Sequence 0 is the highest.
- A pathway’s name and its Sequence names are separate: each route has its own progression.
- Some compiled Sequence names come from author material outside the novel, so a roster should identify its source and status.
