Looking for Jeetu is Vinod Kotwal’s memoir of her brother, Major Shatrujeet Kotwal, whom his family called Jeetu. Drawing on letters and memories from relatives, friends and Army colleagues, it recalls his life and the grief of his death in a road accident in Pune at age 30, shortly before his thirty-first birthday.

What is Looking for Jeetu about?

The book is a family memoir about memory, loss and healing, rather than a general history of the Army or an account of road safety. Vinod Kotwal pieces together her brother’s life through old letters, childhood memories and conversations with people who knew him. The result is a portrait shaped by personal recollection: his relationships, his military work and the way those close to him remember him.

A September 2024 Scroll.in excerpt gives a glimpse of that approach through recollections from his sister, his wife Abha and former colleagues. The excerpt describes his time as an instructor at the National Defence Academy and includes memories of his final period with Abha. Those details are presented through the book’s and its contributors’ accounts, not as an independently investigated biography.

Who was Major Shatrujeet Kotwal?

Speaking Tiger Books identifies Kotwal as a member of the 3 Jat regiment, later posted to the 34 Rashtriya Rifles, and subsequently an instructor at the National Defence Academy. The publisher says he received the Kirti Chakra in January 2008. The Scroll.in excerpt refers to gallantry awards announced on January 25, 2008, and recounts a colleague’s caution about handling fame after the award.

The publisher says Kotwal died in a road accident in Pune on June 17, 2008, a month and a half before his thirty-first birthday. His sister’s book brings that public outline together with memories of the person family members and colleagues knew as Jeetu.

What do the excerpt’s recollections reveal?

The excerpt conveys a life through the perspectives of people who shared different parts of it. Abha remembers their time at the National Defence Academy as a period when she felt he was relaxed and improving in health. In another recollection, his squadron mate Biswajit remembers Kotwal advising him not to become anxious by planning too far ahead or fall into comparisons, and to focus on the present. These are quotations as printed in the excerpt, attributed to the people who recalled them.

Together, such passages show the book’s emphasis: not only the military milestones, but the ordinary bonds and remembered words that give a family tribute its meaning.
