Heritage Auctions says the model later served as a prototype for the larger Enterprise model at the Smithsonian. It is a different artifact from that 11-foot Smithsonian model.
What happened to the original Star Trek Enterprise model?
Heritage Auctions announced that it returned the model to Rod Roddenberry at its Beverly Hills location on April 13, 2024, after its experts authenticated it. The auction house says the model had been kept at that location before the handoff. Neither the family nor Heritage disclosed the financial or legal details of the return, so no purchase price or specific ownership settlement has been established in the cited reporting. Heritage Auctions’ announcement describes the authentication and return.
The recovered object is the roughly three-foot, or 33-inch, model associated with the original series pilot and opening credits. Heritage says it became a prototype for the 11-foot Enterprise model later displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The Smithsonian collection record discusses the larger model and the earlier pilot model’s design and construction by Richard C. Datin Jr. These are related artifacts, not the same model.
How the model disappeared and resurfaced
According to contemporaneous Associated Press reporting, the model was believed to have disappeared in the 1970s after Gene Roddenberry loaned it to the makers of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The account is a reported explanation, not a fully documented chain of custody. The intervening history remains unresolved in the cited sources.
