“‘Lone Fox Dancing’: An excerpt from Ruskin Bond’s autobiography” is a literary extract published by Scroll.in, not a standalone short story. It comes from Bond’s Lone Fox Dancing: My Autobiography, published by Speaking Tiger in 2017, and follows a brief, unexpected friendship during a night in Mussoorie.
What is Lone Fox Dancing: My Autobiography about?
Ruskin Bond’s 2017 autobiography looks back on a life shaped by places, friendships and writing. Its broad account includes his childhood in Jamnagar and New Delhi, school years in Shimla and Dehradun, four years in England from 1951 to 1955, and his return to India before the publication of The Room on the Roof. The Indian Express described the book as divided into four sections.

The Scroll.in page reproduces one passage with permission from Speaking Tiger. It is a small, self-contained episode within the autobiography rather than a summary of the whole book. The print-book record lists ISBN 9789386338907; pagination and photo-insert details vary by edition, so they should not be treated as universal specifications.
What happens in the Scroll.in excerpt?
During a night walk in Mussoorie, Bond meets a quiet boy. They walk together through the bazaar and along a footpath, then share tea and breakfast the following morning. The encounter is modest in outward events, but Bond’s later reflection gives it its emotional weight.
#1 Best Overall
Bond considers that he might have offered the boy paid work and shelter. He decides against making the meeting into either a charity arrangement or a transaction, believing that doing so would change what had made their time together meaningful. The passage rests on that choice: companionship can matter without becoming a commitment to claim, manage or define the other person’s life.
Why is the autobiography called Lone Fox Dancing?
Bond told India Today in 2017 that he took the title from a poem he wrote after seeing a fox alone in the moonlight. He said he identified with the image. The title therefore connects solitude with movement and imagination; it is not a reference to the Mussoorie boy or to the events of this particular excerpt.
In the same interview, Bond described the prologue as “the story of a small man, and his friends and experiences in small places.” That framing suits the excerpt’s scale: an ordinary walk and breakfast become memorable not through drama, but through the care with which Bond considers what the encounter meant.

The autobiography ranges well beyond the Mussoorie episode, tracing Bond’s early life, time in England and return to India. The excerpt offers a glimpse of the book’s personal, place-rooted perspective, but it should not be taken as a complete account of the autobiography’s themes or structure.
