Lizzy Caplan and Tom Riley met in London in 2015, made their first widely reported public appearance together in 2016, became engaged that May and married in Italy in 2017. They welcomed their son Alfie in 2021. The couple have kept their relationship relatively private, and some details—including which film Caplan was making when they met—remain unclear in published accounts.
2015: They met in London
Caplan and Riley met in London in 2015, while she was filming there, according to Us Weekly’s relationship timeline and Entertainment Tonight. Accounts differ on which production she was working on: Us Weekly identifies Allied, while other coverage has associated the meeting with Now You See Me 2. The reporting supports London and the year, but not a definitive film attribution.
2016: First public appearance and engagement
Us Weekly and Entertainment Tonight identify the Prague Opera Ball in 2016 as the couple’s public debut. In May that year, Riley proposed in New York, according to Entertainment Tonight, which attributed the proposal detail to Caplan’s representative. The engagement became public in July.
Riley described why he preferred to keep their relationship out of the celebrity spotlight in a 2016 interview with The Telegraph, quoted by Us Weekly: “The idea of being a ‘power couple’ or in a relationship that is a ‘brand’ is just so unappealing to me.”

2017: They married in Italy
The couple married in Italy over Labor Day weekend in 2017, Us Weekly reported in its wedding coverage. The Guardian also confirms the year. The sources do not establish an exact ceremony date.
2021: Their son Alfie was born
Caplan and Riley’s son, Alfie, was born in 2021. The Guardian reported in February 2023 that he was then 16 months old, and Us Weekly and the Television Academy also identify him as the couple’s son. The available reporting does not give a precise birth date.

2022–23: Caplan discussed becoming parents and sharing family responsibilities
In a November 2022 interview with Grazia, quoted by Us Weekly, Caplan said they had waited until they felt ready to have a child: “We got a lot of life in before we had a kid, so we were both very ready to do this.” She also credited her partnership with Riley for making her workload possible, noting that childcare and other family responsibilities can fall disproportionately to women.
A 2023 Television Academy profile described Caplan living between Los Angeles and London with Riley and Alfie at that time. That is a snapshot from the profile, not confirmation of the family’s current residence.
