Businesses can use live streaming to answer customer questions, demonstrate a product or service, host interviews and events, and create real-time interaction. The strongest broadcasts are planned as events: choose a useful topic, select a platform that fits the audience, promote and test the session, keep viewers involved, then follow up with attendees.
What live streaming can do for a business
A live video gives a business a way to explain something while viewers are present to ask questions. Useful formats include:
- Demonstrations: Show how a product works or walk through a service process.
- Questions and answers: Address common questions in a focused session, with a moderator collecting audience questions.
- Interviews: Bring a guest, customer or subject-matter expert into a conversation relevant to the audience.
- Announcements and events: Broadcast a timely update, panel or presentation when the live audience has a reason to attend.
Start with one audience need and one intended outcome. A stream built around a specific question or useful demonstration is easier to plan and promote than a broadcast whose only purpose is to be live.
Choose a platform and production method
Choose based on where the intended audience is, what the account is eligible to use, whether registration matters, and how much production control the format needs. More equipment or production complexity does not automatically make a stream more effective.

| Option | Best fit | Important requirements and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube mobile | Quick updates or a simple live session from a phone. | YouTube lists mobile as a streaming method. Channel verification and the absence of live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days are among its stated requirements. Check current eligibility in YouTube Help. |
| YouTube webcam | A computer-based presentation or conversation with a simple setup. | This method requires a computer with a webcam. YouTube also supports other methods, so a webcam is not a universal prerequisite. |
| YouTube encoder | A production needing overlays, multiple inputs or external hardware. | An encoder offers production options but calls for setup and testing. YouTube recommends checking the preview, accessibility and audio/video quality before and during the broadcast. |
| LinkedIn Live | A professional event or session aimed at a LinkedIn audience. | Available only to qualified members and Pages; requires a third-party broadcast tool and a scheduled event. LinkedIn’s current overview says spontaneous go-live ended June 22, 2026. Verify eligibility and current instructions before planning. |
For LinkedIn Live, arrange a supported broadcast partner or an RTMP workflow. LinkedIn names StreamYard among preferred broadcasting partners, but the right choice depends on the production requirements and current partner support. YouTube documents mobile, webcam and encoder streaming as distinct options; consult its live-streaming help for the current setup steps and account requirements.
Plan the broadcast as an event
Set the audience promise
Write down who the session is for, what question it answers and what viewers should be able to do or understand afterward. Pick a format—demonstration, Q&A, interview, announcement or event—that delivers on that promise.

Create a run of show
Plan a clear opening, the main useful segment, audience interaction and a close. Decide who will present and who will monitor comments; a moderator lets the host stay focused while questions are gathered and addressed. Avoid a long opening screen that leaves viewers waiting.
Schedule and promote
For LinkedIn, create the event and promote it in advance. LinkedIn recommends setting it up 2–4 weeks before the event; its current overview also says an event can be scheduled minutes before broadcast, although it must be scheduled. Use the event description and promotion to explain the subject, intended audience and reason to attend. Platform details can change, so confirm current rules before launch.

What equipment do you need?
Begin with the equipment you already have and add gear only to solve a specific problem. YouTube’s guidance says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A phone may suit a quick update, while a computer webcam is relevant to YouTube’s webcam method. An encoder and external equipment are options when the format needs them, not prerequisites for every business stream.
- Check your phone or computer camera and microphone before buying anything.
- If using YouTube’s webcam method, use a computer with a webcam; a USB webcam is an optional starter purchase if the built-in camera does not meet your needs.
- For an encoder production, confirm that the chosen encoder and any external inputs work together before event day.
- Use a stable connection suitable for the planned video, and test from the location where you will broadcast.
Test before going live
Use the same equipment, connection and room planned for the event. YouTube recommends an unlisted test stream to check audio, video and equipment before a public broadcast.

- Set up early. Allow time to connect the camera, microphone, encoder or other planned equipment and resolve setup issues.
- Run an unlisted test. Check that speech is clear, video is visible and the equipment behaves as expected.
- Check the viewer experience. Confirm the stream can be opened and viewed on mobile as well as on the device used to produce it.
- For an encoder, inspect the preview. Verify picture and sound before starting the event, and check that any local recording or archive file is intact if you are making one.
- During the broadcast, monitor audio and video. Watch for lost sound, a frozen picture or other changes rather than assuming a successful start means the stream remains healthy.
Keep viewers involved, then follow up
Welcome viewers, explain the session’s purpose and invite relevant questions. Monitor chat or comments while presenting; if you have a moderator, let them surface questions at useful points in the run of show. YouTube describes live video and chat as ways to interact in real time.
Afterward, send attendees relevant resources and a follow-up message. LinkedIn recommends nurturing attendees with resources, email and retargeting. If your broadcaster provides a recording download, identify useful highlights or short clips and share them where the platform and broadcast partner allow. LinkedIn says completed streams remain on the profile or Page as previously recorded live video; confirm current platform behavior before relying on it.

LinkedIn Live content rules to plan around
LinkedIn’s published guidance says Live content should be professional and real-time, asks broadcasters to stream for at least 15 minutes, and cautions: “Avoid selling or promotional streams.” That makes an educational session, useful demonstration or genuine event a safer fit than a broadcast that is only a sales pitch. Review LinkedIn’s current content guidance before producing the session because platform policies may change.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube channel, rather than host a live camera event, StreamNeo is a separate option.
