To go live on YouTube, verify your channel, make sure it has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days, and enable live streaming before your event. Then choose the simplest method that fits: phone for a quick update, webcam for a straightforward computer stream, encoder for gameplay or screen sharing, or a supported console for gameplay. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until stream day.
What you need to go live on YouTube
Start with a verified YouTube channel that has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current general guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Mobile streaming has an additional eligibility threshold of at least 50 subscribers. Requirements can change or vary with account circumstances, so check your channel’s current status in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before planning an event.
- A Google account and YouTube channel.
- A phone, computer with webcam, encoder, or supported console, depending on the kind of stream.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen stream quality.
- For an encoder stream, suitable camera and audio devices, plus the encoder software or hardware.
You do not need expensive equipment to begin. YouTube says that what you have at hand can be enough; an external microphone, webcam, or headphones may improve a particular setup, but they are optional.
Choose the right way to stream
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Vlogging, field updates, or a quick stream from wherever you are | Requires mobile eligibility, including at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, and no recent live-streaming restrictions. Initial activation may take up to 24 hours. |
| Webcam | A simple computer-based talking stream | You need a computer with a webcam. It is a direct route when you do not need gameplay capture, overlays, or a complex production. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external audio/video equipment | Encoder software or hardware sends the stream to YouTube. Set up and test the devices and encoder ahead of time. |
| Console | Gameplay from a supported modern console | YouTube says modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles can stream directly. Follow the console maker’s instructions. |
Pick the least complicated option that covers what viewers need to see and hear. A talking update rarely needs an encoder; a game or computer demonstration often does.

How to prepare your YouTube stream
- Verify the channel and check eligibility. Confirm that the channel is verified and has no active live-streaming restriction that would prevent the event.
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before your planned start time.
- Choose the audience and visibility. Select public, unlisted, or private visibility to match the event. For a personal stream where privacy matters, YouTube recommends private or unlisted settings.
- Set up the chosen method. For a webcam, confirm the intended camera and microphone. For an encoder, connect the camera, microphone, or headset and select the correct inputs in the encoder. For a console, use the console maker’s setup instructions.
- Prepare the event details. Set a clear title and description, and check the visibility and audience settings before starting. Avoid putting personal information in the title or stream.
- Run a realistic test. Include movement and audio like those in the actual stream. Check the preview and stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room before going public.
- Confirm viewers can reach it. Check the channel or watch page and, if possible, open the stream from a mobile device. Make sure the intended audience can see it.
Encoder settings: resolution, bitrate, and keyframes
If you use an encoder, YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the exact mode you intend to use.
For context, YouTube’s current table lists 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC at the same resolution and frame rate. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your internet connection or encoder can sustain the stream. If your connection is constrained, choose a lower output mode rather than pushing a bitrate your upload link cannot reliably provide.

How much upload speed do you need?
Plan around upload speed, not download speed. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate below your available upload capacity and leaving about 20% headroom. Other people and devices sharing the network can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream, and a connection may upload more slowly than it downloads.
- Check the upload capacity of the connection you will actually use, at the time and place you plan to stream.
- Allow room above the encoder’s total bitrate instead of using the full measured upload capacity.
- If the network is shared, account for other active devices or pause large uploads and downloads during the event.
- If the stream health is unstable, reduce resolution or bitrate and test again.
Audio, privacy, and safety
Viewers need to hear you clearly, but a dedicated microphone is not a prerequisite. Test the built-in or external microphone you plan to use, listen for echo or background noise, and confirm the encoder or YouTube has selected the right input. Headphones can help prevent speaker audio from feeding back into the microphone.

Check what is visible and audible before you start: desktop notifications, private documents, addresses, phone numbers, account details, and conversations in the room can all end up on a live broadcast. YouTube also advises limiting channel admin access to trusted people. Community rules apply to live content and chat; report or block chat users who make viewers uncomfortable.
Copyright and reused content
Only stream material you have the right to broadcast, including music, clips, images, and gameplay audio where relevant. A live event is still subject to YouTube’s rules and copyright processes. Do not assume that crediting the creator or owning a copy of a song gives you permission to broadcast it. For recorded or replayed material, also consider whether the channel’s overall content offers original value rather than simply repeating material without meaningful contribution. Check YouTube’s current policies for your specific content before going live.

Troubleshoot common first-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable | The channel is not verified, has a restriction, does not meet mobile eligibility, or has not completed initial activation. | Check channel status and eligibility in YouTube Studio; enable live streaming in advance. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. |
| Encoder cannot connect or the event does not start | Incorrect encoder setup, wrong selected devices, or an issue with the stream configuration. | Recheck YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance, confirm the selected camera and microphone, and test before the event. |
| Video buffers or stream health is poor | The stream bitrate is too high for available upload capacity, or the network is shared or unstable. | Leave roughly 20% upload headroom, reduce bitrate or resolution, and test the actual connection again. |
| Viewers cannot find or open the stream | The event visibility or destination is not what you intended. | Check visibility and verify the watch page from the channel and a mobile device before announcing the event. |
| Viewers cannot hear you clearly | The wrong audio input is selected, the microphone is muted, or the room has echo or noise. | Check the selected input and levels, then run another test with the same setup you will use live. |
