What is season one about, and which book is it based on?
Season one draws specifically on Wilder’s third book, Little House on the Prairie. It follows Charles, Caroline, Mary and Laura as they try to build a new life near Independence, Kansas, amid the demanding conditions of 19th-century prairie life. Netflix’s series guide
The adaptation also broadens the perspective beyond the Ingalls family to include Osage people whose homeland the settlers enter and the consequences of westward expansion. Netflix says the production worked with Osage and Indigenous experts and included Indigenous citizens in cast and crew roles. Yes. Netflix announced the renewal before season one premiered. Its July 2026 guide says the Ingalls family will travel to Walnut Grove, Minnesota. How does the new adaptation relate to the books and original series?
The 2026 Netflix series is a distinct adaptation, drawing its first season from the third Wilder novel and adding an explicitly wider account of the Osage experience. It is separate from the 1970s series rather than a continuation of that show’s storyline.
