Paul Barrere, the guitarist, singer and songwriter whose playing and songs helped define Little Feat for nearly five decades, died on October 26, 2019, at age 71. His death followed reported complications during treatment for liver disease; the exact cause should not be stated more definitively than the available accounts allow.
When did Paul Barrere die, and what happened?
Barrere died on October 26, 2019, aged 71. The Recording Academy reported that he died after medical complications, while The Washington Post reported that he died at UCLA Hospital in Los Angeles.
Little Feat’s statement, as reported by Guitar World and The Washington Post, said side effects from ongoing treatment for liver disease had led him to miss tour dates. The Recording Academy reported that Barrere had been diagnosed with hepatitis C in 1994 and liver cancer in 2015. Those details provide health context, but do not establish a more specific immediate cause of death.
How Barrere became part of Little Feat
Barrere joined Little Feat as a guitarist in 1972, after first auditioning for the band as a bassist. He made his first recording with the group on Dixie Chicken (1973). The Recording Academy described his time with Little Feat as a 47-year tenure.

He became more than a player in the lineup: Barrere sang and wrote or co-wrote songs that became part of the band’s repertoire. Among them were “All That You Dream,” “Old Folks Boogie,” “Time Loves a Hero” and “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now.” The Washington Post also identifies “Walkin’ All Night” and “Down on the Farm” among his songwriting credits.
What did Paul Barrere contribute to Little Feat’s sound?
Barrere’s musicianship ranged beyond a single style. The Washington Post describes his interests growing from blues into jazz, country and pop, and notes his work on slide guitar. That breadth suited a band whose performances could move between tightly arranged songs and open-ended playing.

Little Feat’s live album Waiting for Columbus (1978) offers a strong entry point to that side of the group. The Washington Post called it the band’s sole Top 20 album, noted that it was partly recorded at Lisner Auditorium, and reported that it later ranked 49th on Rolling Stone’s 50 greatest live albums list. Barrere captured the band’s approach in a remark quoted by the Post: “We’ve never been a band that plays the songs the same way twice.” He explained that the songs left room for improvisation, giving the musicians space to play.
Barrere’s solo work and life beyond the band
Before Little Feat reunited in 1988, Barrere released two solo albums: On My Own Two Feet (1983) and Real Lies (1984), according to The Washington Post. His solo work is another way to hear him outside the group setting, though current formats and availability vary and are not established here.

The Post also recalled Barrere’s earlier wild lifestyle and his awareness of how close he had come to following Lowell George’s path. In a 1988 remark quoted in the obituary, Barrere said: “In my personal life, I was about this far behind Lowell, and if I didn’t watch it, I was going to the same place he was.” The quote belongs to that context, rather than serving as a summary of his music or career.
