The album also features tabla player Vijay Ghate.
Where to find the performance
Navras’s catalogue entry for A Rare Genius identifies Bilaskhani Todi and Tilak Kamod as the album’s ragas. The label lists a total running time of 74:08 and says the recording was made in Princeton, USA, in 2001. Vilayat Khan’s official discography also lists the album as a Navras CD and names both ragas.
An Amazon Music listing identifies a track on the album as “Raga Bilaskhani Todi (Alap (Surbahar)),” credited to Vilayat Khan and Vijay Ghate. That track listing helps identify the surbahar performance; it does not establish whether a physical CD is currently in stock.
Why the surbahar matters
In his official biography, Khan describes the surbahar as a magnified, bass version of the sitar. The biography says musicians in his gharana were routinely trained on both instruments, and notes that he recorded Bilaskhani Todi for Navras toward the end of his life. The album’s credits therefore place the two instruments within a practice central to his musical lineage, rather than treating the surbahar as an incidental addition.
