But those lists cover different places, dates and measures, so there was no single universal definition of the season’s best song. Here’s a compact playlist of leading contenders—and where to listen.
What were the best summer songs of 2020?
This curated set brings together prominent tracks from Spotify’s global streaming list and the UK Official Charts ranking. It is a listening recommendation, not a definitive order or an all-country consensus.
- “ROCKSTAR” — DaBaby featuring Roddy Ricch
- “Blinding Lights” — The Weeknd
- “Roses – Imanbek Remix” — SAINt JHN
- “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” — Jason Derulo and Jawsh 685
- “Watermelon Sugar” — Harry Styles
- “Rain On Me” — Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande
For more UK chart standouts, add “Head & Heart” by Joel Corry featuring MNEK, “Breaking Me” by Topic and A7S, and “Rover” by S1mba featuring DTG.
Start listening with Spotify’s global Songs of Summer playlist or the Official Charts playlist on Apple Music. Apple Music lists the latter as 40 songs and 2 hours 6 minutes; that listing was observed in 2026.

What was the song of the summer in 2020?
“ROCKSTAR” is the strongest answer if the question means a song that led both of the available major summer rankings. Spotify’s retrospective, published August 25, 2020, ranked it No. 1 globally by streams from June 1 through August 15. Spotify reported more than 380 million streams for the track in that period. The same list put “Blinding Lights” second, with just under 340 million streams, and “Roses – Imanbek Remix” third, with more than 280 million. These are Spotify streams during that specified window, not lifetime totals.
In the UK, Official Charts named “ROCKSTAR” the Official Song of the Summer. Its ranking covered the first week of June through the last week of August and drew on Official Charts Company streaming and sales data from more than 9,000 UK outlets. For the summer period, Official Charts reported 654,000 chart sales, 72.4 million UK streams and 14.5 million music-video plays for the track.

The UK’s next four were “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat),” “Rain On Me,” “Blinding Lights” and “Head & Heart.” “Breaking Me” ranked No. 6, “Rover” No. 7 and “Watermelon Sugar” No. 8.
Why the lists don’t give one universal winner
The two No. 1 results agree, but they are not the same measurement. Spotify counted global streams over June 1–August 15. The UK ranking covered a longer period and combined UK sales and streams; Official Charts also reported video plays separately. A ranking from one service or country should not be presented as a worldwide verdict.

There was also room for disagreement about whether 2020 had one all-conquering cultural anthem. In a contemporaneous discussion, TIME wrote: “There just hasn’t been that one, singular track with the level of ubiquity we’re accustomed to.” That was an editorial assessment of the season’s cultural mood, not a chart finding. The rankings establish what performed strongly within their defined systems; they cannot settle what every listener considered the summer’s defining song.
How to use Spotify’s summer predictions
Spotify also published a set of predictions on June 23, 2020, based on its curation team’s review of current streaming numbers and trends. Picks included “ROCKSTAR,” “Watermelon Sugar,” “TKN,” “The Bigger Picture,” “Savage Remix” and “Rain On Me.” Treat these as forecasts made midseason, not as a final chart or retrospective ranking.

A summer listening note
Spotify reported that creation of camping-themed playlists on its platform rose 140% from June to July 2020. The company associated the playlists with hiking, stargazing and camping, and named “Blinding Lights,” “Fishin’ in the Dark,” “Under the Bridge” and “Dance Monkey” among their top tracks. This describes activity on Spotify, not a population-wide measure of outdoor listening.
