Four older recorded Bihu songs offer a close, partial view of rural life in Assam: shared food and community, fishing and farming, courtship and money, and the pressures of seasonal change. Their lyrics are cultural traces—not a complete portrait of Assamese rural life—and the recordings are not interchangeable with stage or village-field performances.

Why Bihu songs offer a window on everyday life

In a 2021 feature, writers Joyshri Pathak and Aditya Ranjan Pathak read particular Bihu lyrics for the routines and relationships embedded in them. The songs place ordinary activities—fishing, weaving, planting rice, sharing food—alongside romance, hospitality, livelihood and environmental risk.

The setting is Bohaag, the first month of the Assamese calendar, when Rongali Bihu brings a spring celebration associated with renewal and the first rain. Smithsonian Folkways describes three observances: Bohag (Rongali), Kati (Kangali) and Magh (Bhogali); Bohag marks seed time and is the most prominent of the three. Bihu songs and dances are part of the festival, with dhol and pepa among the instruments heard with Bihu tunes. Scroll’s feature and the Smithsonian Folkways Bihu entry provide the cultural context.

Pathak and Pathak distinguish older recorded songs from traditional village-field and stage performances. The recording format matters: a song on a compilation preserves a particular performance, not the full social setting in which Bihu is sung and danced. The authors also describe a debate in which older recordings are often treated as repositories of cultural feeling, while some contemporary productions are judged shallow. That is their observation about a cultural debate, not a universal verdict on newer music.

Four songs, four glimpses of rural routines

Song Everyday life in the lyrics Broader reading
Sakala Tengati Sharing seasonal sour citrus fruit, going to the Bihu field together, fishing, grooming hair lice and weaving. Shared food and activities evoke community and inclusion.
Dneoe Di Sarile Fishing, weaving traditional clothing, ploughing and planting paddy. Practical skills and livelihood appear alongside gendered expectations about who does which work.
Namore Kathia Courtship, desire and economic aspiration. Romance intersects with a wish for a better life and material security; the authors also note imagery that can make the woman seem objectified.
Thuriai Katila Courtship and betel-nut hospitality against seasonal change and crop loss from flooding. Household welcome and romance coexist with economic insecurity and ecological pressure.

The readings in the table are the authors’ interpretations of specific lyrics, not claims that the songs represent every community or household. Their account is in the Scroll feature.

Sakala Tengati: inclusion through sharing

The song’s appeal to share seasonal sour citrus fruit is a small but telling gesture. In the translation printed by Scroll, the lyric says, “do not eat the citrus fruit alone, give us a piece as well”. The line turns food into a sign of belonging: the invitation is not simply to eat, but to share an activity and a moment with others. The song also refers to going together to the Bihu field, fishing, grooming hair lice and weaving, bringing communal leisure and domestic routines into the same frame.

Scroll identifies Khagen Mahanta and Archana Mahanta as singers. A digital catalog listing for the compilation Assamese Bihu Songs credits “Sakala Tengati” to Archana Mahanta, Khagen Mahanta and Traditional. The Amazon Music listing is a catalog record, not evidence of a physical disc edition.

Dneoe Di Sarile: skill, work and gender

Fishing, weaving traditional clothing, ploughing and planting paddy are named activities in the lyrics. Together, they make work visible as a collection of learned, practical skills rather than an abstract backdrop to festival life. Pathak and Pathak also draw attention to the gendered division of labor suggested by the song: its tasks are not presented as socially neutral, though one lyric cannot describe how all households divide work.

Rank #3
American Folk Songs for Solo Singers: Medium Low Voice (Book & CD)
  • Format: Book & CD
  • Voicing: Medium Low Voice
  • Instrument: Voice
  • Genre: Folk
  • Category: Vocal Collection

Scroll identifies Sharat Sharma as a singer. Amazon Music lists the track under the spelling “Dneoe Di Sarile,” crediting Sharat Sharma, Shiv Prasad Nath and Prafulla Deka. The compilation listing offers one way to find the recording.

Namore Kathia: romance and material security

The song pairs desire and courtship with the hope of improving one’s circumstances. The authors read that combination as a reminder that romance exists within economic life: aspiration and material security can matter alongside affection. They also note that some of the imagery can make the woman seem objectified, a tension worth noticing rather than smoothing over.

There is a title-spelling difference that may help when searching: Scroll calls it “Namore Kathia,” while Amazon Music lists “Namore Kothia.” Scroll credits Bhupen Hazarika and Anju Devi; the Amazon catalog also credits Hemen Hazarika. Amazon Music’s catalog entry lists the track under its alternate spelling.

Thuriai Katila: hospitality under seasonal pressure

Betel-nut hospitality and courtship sit alongside insecurity in this song. The authors connect its seasonal transition and a flood-damaged crop to the vulnerability of livelihoods tied to cultivation. In that reading, a gesture of household welcome does not erase material hardship; both belong to the same picture of rural life.

How to find the recordings

Amazon Music’s Assamese Bihu Songs catalog listing names 14 tracks, including all four discussed here. It attributes the compilation to various artists and Saregama India Ltd and states a 1975 release date; platform metadata can vary by market and over time. The listing establishes a digital catalog result, not the availability of a CD or vinyl edition. Search with alternate spellings where needed: “Namore Kothia” for “Namore Kathia” and “Thuriai Katilo” for “Thuriai Katila.” See the Amazon Music listing.
