The familiar Listen Out festival did not take place in 2025. Organizers described the decision as a pause, not a permanent end, and announced a different project: Listen Out Presents, a series of one-off curated parties in locations around Australia. Later examples included Mochakk at Sydney’s Fleet Steps, plus Australian appearances by Meduza and Gorgon City.
Why was Listen Out cancelled for 2025?
On 7 July 2025, ABC triple j reported that Listen Out would not return in its familiar festival format that year. The team’s Instagram statement said, “The last few year’s (sic) have been tough,” and described the decision as “hitting pause” on Listen Out as audiences knew it. The statement did not give a detailed financial explanation or identify a single cause. ABC triple j’s report said more information was expected the following day.
The team also said, “we’re hitting pause on Listen Out as you know it. But we’re not going anywhere.” That wording announced a change in format, not a confirmed permanent closure or a promise that the original festival would return in a later year.
What is Listen Out Presents?
Listen Out Presents was the name given to the new format: “one-off, curated parties in killer locations,” according to the team’s announcement as reported by ABC triple j. Rather than the established touring festival, it centred on individual shows and selected artists. The quoted description is the organizer’s promotional language; it does not establish a complete schedule or a fixed annual format.

Which Listen Out Presents events were announced?
Fuzzy’s later 2025 recap provides examples, not a full event calendar:
- Mochakk played at Fleet Steps in Sydney, with the Opera House and harbour lights as the backdrop.
- Meduza and Gorgon City made Australian appearances under the Listen Out Presents banner.
- The recap said Disco Lines had a sold-out Sydney show and a Melbourne date planned for the following year.

How did the new format differ from the original festival?
The original Listen Out was a national touring dance festival with hip-hop and electronic music. Its official About page says it began in 2013 and toured Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. It also describes Listen In, created in 2018, as a concentrated version for Adelaide and Auckland.
| Format | What the sources establish |
|---|---|
| Listen Out festival | National touring dance festival with a hip-hop/electronic lineup; began in 2013 and toured Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, according to the official About page. |
| Listen Out Presents | One-off curated parties in locations around Australia; later examples include Mochakk at Fleet Steps and appearances by Meduza and Gorgon City. |
This is a comparison of formats, not evidence that one was more successful or financially viable. Fuzzy reported that more than 50,000 people attended its events across 2025, but that organization-wide figure is not an attendance total for Listen Out Presents.
