Aneesh Pradhan’s listening sequence for Scroll.in follows dadra compositions through contrasting tempos and ragas, with a particularly clear rhythmic turn in a Rasoolan Bai performance that moves between Dadra and Kaherva taal.
First, distinguish dadra the form from Dadra taal
Dadra refers here to a vocal form; Dadra taal is a rhythmic cycle. Many dadra compositions are set to Dadra taal, but sharing a name does not make the form and the cycle the same thing. In a related Scroll.in article, tabla performer, teacher, composer and scholar Aneesh Pradhan notes that some vocalists also sing bol banaav thumris in the six-matra Dadra taal, while Dadra taal is usually associated with the dadra form.
Pradhan’s comparison describes dadra as generally more tightly shaped than thumri, with shorter melodic excursions returning to the refrain. Treat that as a useful description of the form, not a rule that dictates every performance.
What to listen for in the six-matra cycle
A taal is a repeating rhythmic cycle, and a matra is one time unit within it. Dadra taal has six matras. A teaching page presents one common way to feel its structure as two groups of three, with the first group marked tali (clap) and the second khali (wave). Its example theka—the basic stroke pattern that marks the cycle—is “dha, dhin, na, dha, tun, na.” The page notes that variations exist, so this is an example rather than the only valid pattern.

As you listen, notice how the singer’s phrasing sits against the cycle, whether the tempo leaves room for more expansive melodic elaboration, and when the rhythmic accompaniment becomes more animated. Pradhan’s feature also points to laggi in these compositions; listen for that change in rhythmic energy rather than assuming it must occur at one fixed point.

Siddheshwari Devi in Gara: a medium-tempo opening
The first example is Siddheshwari Devi singing a dadra in Gara at a medium tempo. Use it to settle into the vocal line and the recurring rhythmic cycle before moving to the faster examples.

Faiyaz Khan: a faster dadra
Faiyaz Khan’s example is faster. Compare how the quicker pace changes the balance between vocal phrasing and the rhythmic cycle, and how much space remains for melodic elaboration.

Rasoolan Bai: dholak and a change of taal
Rasoolan Bai’s faster performance features dholak prominently. Pradhan describes the accompaniment moving seamlessly from Dadra to Kaherva and back. Listen for the change in the rhythmic frame and for how the transition is integrated into the performance, rather than treating the switch as a break in the song.

The final listed track returns to Siddheshwari Devi, this time singing a dadra in Bhairavi. It brings the sequence back to her voice after the faster examples, while offering a different raga from the opening Gara performance.
