Lions was the working title of Richard Gadd’s next drama after Baby Reindeer. The BBC commissioned the six-part series first; HBO later joined as co-producer. HBO’s current listing calls it Half Man, a story about estranged “brothers” Niall and Ruben that begins with a violent reunion at a wedding and reaches back almost forty years.
Is Lions the same series as Half Man?
Yes. Lions was identified as a working title in the BBC’s February 2024 commission announcement and HBO’s June 2024 co-production announcement. HBO’s current property listing uses Half Man for the six-episode limited series. The title change does not indicate a separate project.
Who made the series, and how did HBO become involved?
The BBC commissioned the drama before HBO joined the project. The original announcement described a six-part drama created and written by Gadd for BBC One, BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer, made by Mam Tor Productions. HBO announced in June 2024 that it would co-produce the series with the BBC. Gadd is the writer and an executive producer; Alexandra Brodski and Eshref Reybrouck were attached to direct in HBO’s announcement. Banijay’s announcement names Brodski as lead director and Wendy Griffin as producer, with Tally Garner, Morven Reid, Gadd and BBC’s Gaynor Holmes as executive producers, and Gavin Smith for BBC Scotland. Banijay Rights handles international distribution. HBO’s announcement confirms its later co-production role.
What is Half Man about?
The story centers on Niall and Ruben, described in the official synopsis as estranged “brothers.” Ruben turns up at Niall’s wedding, and their reunion sets off violence. From that opening, the drama follows their relationship from meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults, spanning nearly forty years from the 1980s to the present. The series is set and filmed in and around Glasgow.

Where can you watch it?
HBO’s current property listing for Half Man identifies Max as a streaming destination and gives an April debut month. That listing does not establish a country-by-country schedule or confirm launch status for every territory. Check HBO or Max’s local listing for current availability; the BBC’s original announcement named BBC One, BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer as the UK services for which the drama was made.
Is this connected to Richard Gadd’s Netflix deal?
Not as a production relationship. Netflix announced a multiyear scripted-series first-look deal with Gadd in September 2024, after the BBC commission and HBO co-production announcements. That separate deal does not change the BBC and HBO credits for Half Man. Netflix reported that Baby Reindeer had 88.4 million views after 91 days, spent eight weeks on its Global Top 10 TV list for English-language series, and reached the Top 10 in 92 countries. The series won six Emmy Awards in limited or anthology series categories, according to Netflix Tudum.
