“Along Came a Spider,” the third episode of Lioness season 2, is slower and more transitional than a major turning point—but it still advances the operation. Kaitlyn works to win political support while Joe begins training Captain Josie Carrillo, and the training storyline culminates in a pointed confrontation over Josie’s father.
Episode details
Paramount+ lists “Along Came a Spider” as season 2, episode 3, released November 3, 2024, with a 51-minute runtime and a TV-MA rating. Its official synopsis identifies the episode’s two central threads: Kaitlyn drumming up support for the plan and Lioness training beginning for Captain Josie Carrillo. Paramount+ episode listing.

Does the episode move the season’s story forward?
Yes, but mostly by putting the next phase in motion rather than delivering a completed operation. Kaitlyn and Bryon work to build political backing, while Joe’s team starts preparing Josie for the Lioness role. Those parallel tracks show both the authorization work and the field preparation the plan requires. The larger mission remains in a build-up phase, so viewers looking for a decisive operational payoff may find the episode’s progress modest. TVLine recap.

Is Captain Josie Carrillo a mole?
The episode makes Josie’s trustworthiness a live question, but the available recap does not establish that she is a mole. At Fort Bliss, her training gets off to an unwelcome start, and Joe presses her on what the mission could cost. The more revealing beat arrives at the end: Joe confronts Josie about the truth concerning her father. Josie then calls him and admits she is not doing well. That closing exchange shifts the tension from a simple suspicion of betrayal toward the personal pressure behind Josie’s recruitment. TVLine recap; Ready Steady Cut recap.
Why it can feel like filler—and what gives it weight
The episode spends much of its time on setup: political support, operational preparation, and the beginning of Josie’s training. That procedural material is relevant to the mission, but it does not amount to a major payoff on its own. Ready Steady Cut describes the chapter as slower and points to Joe’s internal conflict over Josie as its character payoff. Ready Steady Cut.

“High-volume filler” is a critic’s judgment, not a settled consensus. Rotten Tomatoes lists two critic reviews for the episode: Brittany Frederick’s CBR review is scored 5/10 and summarized as “A high-volume filler episode keeps the plot moving”; Andy Andersen’s Vulture review is scored 3/5. With only those two reviews listed, the phrase is best understood as one critic’s description of the episode’s mix of activity and limited payoff. Rotten Tomatoes episode page.
My read is that the label catches the episode’s pacing but misses its purpose. It is a transitional chapter, yet Joe’s challenge to Josie makes the recruitment emotionally specific, while Kaitlyn’s political work shows the less visible machinery required to move the plan forward. Whether that balance works will depend on how much a viewer values character groundwork over immediate action.

Verdict
“Along Came a Spider” is a slower installment that advances the mission through preparation rather than a major turn. Its clearest payoff is Joe’s confrontation with Josie about her father, which makes the question of whether she can be trusted feel personal rather than merely procedural.
