Linda Lavin died on December 29, 2024, aged 87. The Los Angeles Times reported that her death certificate listed cardiopulmonary arrest due to underlying lung cancer. She died at her home in Malibu, in Los Angeles County.
What the death certificate says
“Cardiopulmonary arrest” describes the immediate event in which the heart and breathing stop. The certificate identified lung cancer as the underlying condition that led to that event. Lavin’s representative had earlier said that she died after complications from recently discovered lung cancer.

The death-certificate account provides a more specific medical explanation than the representative’s initial statement: lung cancer was the underlying disease, while cardiopulmonary arrest was the immediate cause recorded at death.

She was also a major Broadway performer
Lavin won the 1987 Tony Award for best actress in a play for Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound. She received five additional Tony nominations, underscoring a stage career that stood alongside her television fame rather than being overshadowed by it.
Her career continued near the end of her life
Shortly before her death, Lavin was promoting Netflix’s No Good Deed and filming Hulu’s Mid-Century Modern. Those projects represent her continuing screen work decades after Alice ended.
Tributes to Lavin
Actors’ Equity Association, the performers’ union, remembered Lavin as “a tremendous performer with a generous heart,” according to the Associated Press. The tribute reflects both her professional stature and the personal warmth colleagues associated with her.
