The first public look at live-action Stitch arrived at D23 in Anaheim on August 9, 2024. Disney’s November teaser made the fluffy CGI design clearer, showing Stitch disrupting a sand sculpture of Cinderella Castle on a Hawaiian beach. The film opened in U.S. theaters on May 23, 2025; Japan’s theatrical release followed on June 6.
When did Disney reveal the live-action Stitch?
Disney Japan reported that the first live-action Stitch visual was shown at D23 in Anaheim on August 9, 2024. The studio described an enthusiastic response to the fluffy CGI character. Disney Japan’s announcement, dated November 27, 2024, then introduced the teaser and poster, explicitly describing Stitch as CGI-made.
In the teaser, Stitch wreaks havoc on a sand Cinderella Castle on a Hawaiian beach. The image established the central visual contrast: a familiar animated character rendered with a furry, dimensional appearance in a live-action setting.
What kind of film is the 2025 version?
Disney describes the feature as a live-action reimagining of its 2002 animated classic. That label describes the filmmaking approach, not a promise that every element was photographed in live action: Stitch is CGI. The film was directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and produced by Jonathan Eirich and Dan Lin, according to Disney’s official movie page.

Release dates differed by region. Disney lists May 23, 2025, as the U.S. theatrical date; Disney Japan’s corporate material gives June 6, 2025, for Japan. The Japanese date is specific to that market, not a replacement for the U.S. date.
How did the filmmakers approach adapting Stitch?
Director Dean Fleischer Camp framed the adaptation around the limits and strengths of each medium: “We were very clear-eyed about the fact that animation and live action are two completely different mediums; there are things you can do well in live-action that you can’t in animation, and vice versa.” He also said, “It was always our goal to make something that rhymed spiritually with the original film but was a little modernized.” Both comments appear in Disney-published material, including Disney+’s feature on the film.

The character’s movement was part of that translation. Alex Kuperschmidt, lead animator on Stitch, called him “incredibly unpredictable” and said Stitch is “designed to look… almost like a stuffed toy, but he moves more like a lizard, which is to say very quick and very unexpected.” The combination points to a design meant to feel soft and huggable while preserving the sudden, unruly physicality central to the character.
The production also involved people connected to the original. Disney+ says the filmmakers worked with Chris Sanders, the original director and voice of Stitch, and animator Alex Kuperschmidt. Camp said, “We could not possibly have made this movie without the people who made the original.” Sanders reflected on the character’s appeal: “I could not have predicted that Stitch would be embraced by people the way he has.” David Greenbaum, president of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, described Stitch as “an example of what Disney actually does best.”

What is known—and not known—about CGI Stitch?
Disney’s public-facing materials explain the character’s CGI status, visual intent and creative contributors, but they do not identify a CGI vendor, software, rendering pipeline or frame-by-frame workflow. That means viewers can discuss the visible design and performance, but claims about the specific tools or production process are not established by these public sources.
Useful ways to compare the animated and live-action versions are the proportions and silhouette, the apparent fur and facial texture, and the timing and force of Stitch’s movement. These are visual comparisons rather than objective production measurements. Camp’s description of the mediums as having different strengths offers the clearest published context for why an adaptation might preserve the character’s spirit without reproducing every animated choice literally.

What does Disney say about Stitch’s popularity?
In an undated Disney+ feature crawled in 2026, The Walt Disney Company said Stitch’s consumer-products brand had grown 27-fold over the preceding five years. Disney did not provide a detailed methodology or independent audit alongside that figure, so it is best understood as a company-reported measure rather than an independently verified market statistic.
In a 2025 Disney Japan corporate interview, Greenbaum said the marketing team’s Super Bowl spot was viewed more than 170 million times in 24 hours. That is his attribution of the view figure, not an independently audited count. Neither number is needed to establish what the CGI reveal showed, but both illustrate the scale of Disney’s own claims about Stitch’s audience and marketing reach.
Are there live-action Stitch toys or figures?
Disney’s official pages document merchandise tied to Stitch, including toys, plush, figures, apparel, homeware and pet items. Disney Parks Blog’s roundup includes Just Play Movie Time Stitch Blind Boxes and a Stitch Vinyl Figure; Disney’s movie page lists a Stitch Puppetronic branded for the live-action film. Listings and stock can vary by territory and over time, so check a retailer’s current product page for the specific item and edition.
