Tha Carter III turned 18 on June 10, 2026. Its significance is not just a milestone anniversary: the album marked a peak in Lil Wayne’s run of mixtapes and hit singles, and its influence remains part of how he talks about hip-hop’s staying power. Wayne has since released Tha Carter VI, making the story one of legacy and continuation—not an album still waiting to arrive.
Why Tha Carter III remains a defining album
Released on June 10, 2008, Tha Carter III arrived after years of prolific mixtape releases and a run of prominent singles. Spotify’s 2018 anniversary feature reported that the album went platinum one week after its debut and singled out “Lollipop,” “A Milli,” “Mrs. Officer” and “Mr. Carter” as key tracks. Those are Spotify’s retrospective descriptions and figure, rather than a current certification audit. Spotify’s 10th-anniversary feature places the album in the context of Wayne’s career at the time.
The album’s legacy is also visible in how it became a reference point for what a major rap release could mean. Spotify Creative Director and Head of Urban Music Carl Chery called Wayne “a benchmark in hip-hop” and said, “Every artist aspires to drop Tha Carter III.” That is Chery’s assessment of the album’s influence, not a measurable industry ranking.
Spotify Creative Manager for Hip-Hop and R&B Brittany Lewis framed the anniversary as recognition during an artist’s career: “With a career as illustrious as Wayne’s, we thought it was paramount to give an artist ‘the flowers’ while they can still smell them.” The comment helps explain why the album’s anniversary coverage focuses on both its impact and Wayne himself.

What Wayne has said about hip-hop and longevity
In a Billboard interview conducted by executive director of R&B/hip-hop Gail Mitchell on July 9, 2023, at Quixote Studios in Los Angeles, Wayne discussed changes in music, age expectations in rap, social media, AI, mixtapes, Young Money and work on Tha Carter VI. The interview report, reproduced by LilWayneHQ, quotes Wayne’s concise view of the genre’s future: “Hip-hop will never be over.” Read the interview report.
That line sits alongside a long-standing resistance to fixed genre boundaries. In an archival GQ Q&A, Wayne said, “I don’t put no categories on it, it’s not hip-hop, it’s not gangsta rap, it’s not R&B, it’s not reggae, it’s not reggaeton, it’s Wayne.” He was describing his approach to classification—not commenting on the 2026 anniversary. The same interview offers a glimpse of how he worked around leaks during the making of Tha Carter III. Asked how much material he rewrote, he answered, “None. They already had a lot of it. I record so many songs they had so much material.” Read the GQ Q&A.

Tha Carter VI is out, not upcoming
Wayne’s latest Carter installment, Tha Carter VI, was released on June 6, 2025. Universal Music Canada described it as a 19-track album released through Young Money Entertainment and Republic Records. Its listed collaborators and features span Lin-Manuel Miranda, Wyclef Jean, Andrea Bocelli, Bono, Big Sean, 2 Chainz, MGK and Jelly Roll—an eclectic lineup that signals a broad approach rather than a narrow return to one sound. Universal Music Canada’s release announcement has the label’s track and collaborator information.
The album’s release gives a concrete answer to the question of what came next after the Carter III era: Wayne continued the series, while his comments about hip-hop’s future make clear that he does not treat the genre as a closed chapter. The label’s announcement is a release notice, not an independent assessment of the album’s reception or long-term standing.
