Lil Nas X released the “J CHRIST” single and official video on January 12, 2024. The self-directed video uses Christian imagery—from a cross to Noah’s Ark motifs—as part of a comeback narrative. Here’s what appears in it, how the artist explained the title, and why some viewers objected.
What happens in the “J CHRIST” video?
Lil Nas X wrote the story and made his solo directorial debut with the video, according to Sony Music Canada’s release announcement. Its reported imagery moves between heaven and hell and includes crucifix imagery, a flooded scene with Noah’s Ark references, and a basketball game between an angel and a demon. These scenes put religious symbols alongside theatrical, sometimes playful spectacle; their presence alone does not establish one fixed meaning for every sequence.
The song’s credits name Lil Nas X (Montero Hill), Omer Fedi, Mike Levy (Gesaffelstein), and Blake Slatkin as co-writers. Fedi, Gesaffelstein, and Lil Nas X are credited as producers.
Why is it called “J CHRIST”?
Before release, Lil Nas X described the song as dedicated to “the man who had the greatest comeback of all time,” as reported by TIME. In a January 15, 2024 video response, he clarified that the artwork meant “I’m back like Jesus,” not an attack on Christians, according to TheWrap.

That stated comeback framing is distinct from an interpretation offered by Delvyn Case, a professor of music at Wheaton College in Massachusetts. TIME reported that Case read the comparison as both a boast about Lil Nas X’s return after a two-year gap between songs and a use of Jesus imagery in response to anti-LGBTQ persecution. That is Case’s analysis, not a separate explanation declared by the artist.
Why did some viewers criticize it?
Some viewers said the religious imagery mocked or disrespected Christianity. That criticism was not a universal Christian response, and it focused on imagery that many people regard as sacred. Lil Nas X rejected the claim that he intended to insult Christians.

He also apologized for a separate TikTok in which he simulated taking communion, saying, “I do apologize for that, that was overboard,” as quoted by TheWrap. The communion post and the “J CHRIST” video are related in the public controversy, but they are separate acts; his apology referred to the TikTok.
