Lightweight Streaming Software for Older PCs

OBS Studio is a practical first streaming app to test on an older PC, but compatibility is not a performance guarantee. Check your encoder, simplify scenes and tune output settings for your actual workload.

For many older PCs, OBS Studio is the best first streaming app to try—not because it is proven to use the least CPU, but because its published compatibility guidance, setup wizard and performance troubleshooting make it practical to configure for limited hardware. Compatibility alone does not mean a computer can stream smoothly. Your encoder, output settings, game, scene and network all matter, so test the setup you actually plan to use.

Can an older PC run streaming software?

Possibly. First distinguish whether the software can run from whether the computer can render and encode your particular stream without stuttering or dropped frames. OBS Project puts it plainly: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” See the OBS system requirements for the published compatibility baseline.

OBS Studio compatibility baseline

  • Windows: Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU.
  • macOS: macOS 11 or later and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU.
  • Linux/Unix: OpenGL 3.3 and X window system or Wayland.

These are basic requirements, not a promise of smooth streaming. A simple camera or screen capture is a different workload from a demanding game with animated overlays, browser sources, filters and several media sources.

Which streaming software should you try first?

OBS Studio: a sensible first test on limited hardware

OBS is worth evaluating first because its official documentation covers operating-system compatibility, hardware encoding, setup and performance fixes. Its Quick Start Guide describes an Auto-Configuration Wizard that considers intended use, hardware and network conditions. Treat the result as a starting configuration, then test it with your actual content.

Download OBS from the official OBS download page. The page listed version 32.2.2, released August 14, 2026; check the vendor page for the version currently offered before installing.

Streamlabs Desktop: check its current requirements carefully

Streamlabs Desktop is an alternative, but its current support page lists Windows 11 or macOS 12+ and 8 GB RAM as minimum requirements. It recommends newer processors, graphics cards, 16 GB or more of RAM and an SSD for intensive use. The requirements page was last updated April 8, 2026; check it for the release and operating system you intend to install: Streamlabs Desktop System Requirements.

Streamlabs gives 3.6 Mbps or better as a guideline for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. That is vendor guidance, not a universal platform guarantee; the platform’s current settings and your available upload speed determine what is viable.

There is no controlled comparison here showing that OBS uses less CPU than Streamlabs on identical older hardware. A complicated scene can burden either app, and the game or captured content may dominate the workload. Choose based on compatibility and test performance rather than a blanket “lightest app” claim.

Check your PC and choose an encoder

Before tuning settings, find the exact operating system, graphics adapter, RAM and encoders available in the software. Do not assume that a processor or graphics-card brand guarantees hardware encoding support; verify the specific hardware model and the encoder listed by the app.

When supported, hardware encoding can move video encoding work off the CPU. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync, but support and quality vary by hardware generation. Its hardware encoding guide gives these compatibility notes:

  • NVIDIA NVENC: GeForce 750 Ti or 900-series Maxwell and newer. OBS recommends later-generation NVENC for best results and notes a GTX 1650 revision distinction. Check the exact card and driver.
  • Intel Quick Sync: Intel Core-i 2xxx/Sandy Bridge or newer for support; Haswell/Core-i 4xxx or newer is recommended because early Quick Sync quality was low.
  • AMD AMF: OBS documents it as a hardware encoder option; check the guide and your software’s encoder list for your hardware’s support.

These are encoder compatibility and quality notes, not predictions that a specific PC will stream a specific game smoothly.

Set up a low-load stream and test it

  1. Check compatibility and install the app. Confirm the OS and hardware against the vendor’s current requirements, then install from the official download page.
  2. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. Open OBS and use the wizard described in its Quick Start Guide. It considers your intended use, hardware and network; use its settings as a baseline, not a guarantee.
  3. Build a simple scene. Start with only the capture source, required audio inputs and essential overlays. Add browser sources, filters, animated media and additional scene elements only when needed.
  4. Use an available hardware encoder if appropriate. Confirm the exact option exposed by your system. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU work, but generation and output quality matter.
  5. Test the real workload. Run the actual game or capture source with the intended overlays and audio. A machine that opens OBS may still struggle to render or encode this combination.
  6. Adjust based on the result. If the video is choppy or OBS reports overload, work through the fixes below and test again.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Lower output resolution. A smaller output asks the computer to process fewer pixels. If the stream remains overloaded, try the next changes.
  • Reduce frame rate. Dropping from 60 fps to 30 fps reduces the work, according to OBS. The trade-off is less motion smoothness.
  • Limit the game’s frame rate or graphics settings. A game using most of the PC’s resources leaves less capacity for streaming.
  • Close other GPU-heavy applications. This can free graphics resources for rendering and encoding.
  • Simplify the scene. Remove unneeded filters, browser sources, animated overlays and media sources.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS says this may resolve some GPU overload issues.

If video rendering looks healthy but the stream still falters, consider whether upload capacity or network conditions are the constraint. The OBS wizard considers network conditions; Streamlabs’ 3.6 Mbps guideline applies to its stated 720p-at-30-fps scenario and most platforms, not every configuration.

Keep a YouTube stream running without an old PC at home

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, you do not have to leave OBS or a computer running at home. StreamNeo runs the uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It is for uploaded videos streaming to YouTube, not a live camera feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo runs with your computer off, streams the uploaded file as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
