Its strongest links to the original are Max herself—older, carrying her past—and a supernatural investigation that makes ordinary spaces and personal choices feel charged. The trade-off, according to reviewers, is a relatively contained adventure in which character themes can outshine the murder mystery.
What brings Max back
Square Enix’s setup is direct: Max finds her friend Safi dead in the snow, then discovers a way into a parallel timeline where Safi is alive but still in danger. Max can move between those realities as she tries to solve the murder and prevent it. The publisher sums up the premise as “Two Timelines. One Impossible Mystery.”

In Ben Sheene’s October 28, 2024 review for Digital Chumps, Max is an artist in residence at Caledon University. She has grown close to Safi, and the investigation unfolds in a close-knit university setting rather than across a sprawling world. That focus gives the story room to stay near its characters, though it also limits the locations players visit.
At the beginning, players indicate whether Max saved Chloe or sacrificed her for Arcadia Bay in the first Life is Strange. Sheene notes that Max’s history with Chloe remains a focal point in either framing. The available coverage does not establish the full consequences of that choice, so it is better understood as a way of acknowledging Max’s past than as a guarantee of any particular outcome.

Why it can feel like the original
Max is older, but still recognizably Max
Bradly Shankar’s September 5, 2024 MobileSyrup preview called Max’s return comfortably nostalgic and narratively promising. After roughly an hour and a half with a demo, Shankar described her as more mature, self-assured, and meditative, while retaining her nerdy warmth. That judgment comes from a limited preview, not the finished game, but it captures the sequel’s central balancing act: Max has changed, yet the qualities that made her distinctive remain part of the appeal.
Sheene likewise praises Hannah Telle’s return as Max and the cast’s expressive performances, including the facial animation. His review connects the character work to themes of trauma and loss, with Max’s past informing how she moves through the present. The continuity is emotional as much as factual: the game asks what Max carries forward, not just what she remembers.

- Supernatural powers collide with everyday life, and every choice you make has consequences.
- LIFE IS STRANGE is a single-player narrative adventure series that focuses on heartfelt, grounded stories with a twist of the strange, and a franchise that has won over 100 awards since its inception - including from The Peabody Awards, BAFTA, and GLAAD.
- Over five cinematic, emotional adventures, you’ll Rewind Time as Max Caulfield and uncover the secrets of Arcadia Bay with Chloe Price, take a road trip with Sean Diaz and his telekinetic brother Daniel, find a new home with psychic empath Alex Chen, and return to Max to solve a murder across two timelines.
A supernatural power becomes an investigative tool
The first game made Max’s rewind ability central to how players experienced decisions. Double Exposure changes the shape of that power: instead of rewinding time, Max crosses between two timelines. In Sheene’s account, the “Living” and “Dead” realities differ in atmosphere as well as information. Players can inspect a space in one timeline, listen in on conversations, and use clues or objects from one reality to make progress in the other.
Both Shankar’s preview and Sheene’s review highlight this movement between worlds as the main exploration and puzzle-solving device. It gives the mystery a tactile rhythm: notice a difference, cross over, and see whether a detail in one version of a place explains what is happening in the other. The supernatural mechanic therefore feels connected to Max’s character and to the act of investigation, rather than being a separate spectacle.

Where the mystery takes second place
Sheene found the adventure relatively easy and centered on a small number of locations. He also observed that character growth and thematic material can take precedence over the central mystery. Readers looking for a densely plotted whodunit or demanding puzzles may find that balance less satisfying; the case is often a framework for spending time with Max and the people around her.
That emphasis is also what supports the game’s nostalgic pull. The return is not only to a familiar protagonist or a recognizable supernatural premise, but to character-centered storytelling in which relationships and emotional aftermath matter alongside plot mechanics. This is a synthesis of the cited coverage, not a claim that every returning player will feel the same way.

What reviewers found—and what they did not
Sheene praised the intimate setting, soundtrack, performances, and facial animation, while also noting loose narrative threads. In the preview build he played, he saw texture pop-in and one character model disappear. Those are specific observations from that build; they do not establish that every current version has the same problems.
Shankar’s MobileSyrup preview was based on about 90 minutes with a demo and left open how the original game’s endings would affect the full story. It supports a favorable impression of Max’s return and the cross-timeline design, but not a definitive judgment of the complete narrative. Together, the preview and review offer qualitative perspectives rather than a measurable consensus.
