Libby Titus, the singer-songwriter who co-wrote “Love Has No Pride,” died on October 13, 2024, at 77. Her work included two self-titled albums, songwriting collaborations with Burt Bacharach and Dr. John, and a role in developing New York’s Rock and Soul Revue. She was also married to Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen and was the mother of singer-songwriter Amy Helm.

From two self-titled albums to a lasting songwriting credit

Titus released her self-titled debut in 1968 and a second self-titled album in 1977. The later record featured “Love Has No Pride,” the song most closely associated with her as a songwriter and performer. Best Classic Bands dates both albums to those years and credits Phil Ramone, Robbie Robertson, Paul Simon, and Carly Simon as producers of the 1977 album; AllMusic’s album listing also includes the song among its tracks.

“Love Has No Pride”

Titus co-wrote “Love Has No Pride” with Eric Kaz. She recorded it herself for her 1977 album, and it later became widely known through versions by other artists, including Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt. Those recordings brought the song to different audiences, while Titus remained one of its credited writers.

Work beyond her solo records

Between and after her albums, Titus worked as a backing singer and collaborator. Her credits included songs written with Burt Bacharach, among them “Riverboat” and “In Tune,” as well as work with Dr. John. Titus and Dr. John wrote together and performed “The Sailor and the Mermaid” on a Sesame Street album, according to Legacy’s obituary. Her catalog of songwriting, performance, and background-vocal credits extends across other artists’ recordings, as listed by AllMusic.

How Titus helped bring the New York Rock and Soul Revue together

In the 1980s, Titus organized concerts featuring musicians at small New York City venues. The gatherings grew into the New York Rock and Soul Revue, a project that brought together performers including Fagen, Walter Becker, Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, and Patti Austin. Showbiz411 reports that Titus conceived the Revue idea in 1989 and that the concerts helped reunite Fagen and Becker after a break from Steely Dan.

Her family and marriage to Donald Fagen

Titus and Levon Helm had a daughter, Amy Helm, who became a singer-songwriter. Titus married Fagen in 1993, and they remained married until her death.

After Titus died, Fagen issued a statement quoted by Best Classic Bands and Showbiz411: “My beautiful wife, Libby Titus Fagen, passed on October 13th surrounded by family. Thanks for keeping us in your thoughts, and for respecting our privacy at this time.”
