That was not a conviction or confirmation that a trial had begun. The case changed substantially after the initial November 2024 announcement: three people first charged were later processed on different theories, and appeals judges dismissed the negligent-homicide cases against those three.
What happened to Liam Payne?
Payne died on October 16, 2024, after falling from a third-floor balcony at Casa Sur Palermo, a hotel in Buenos Aires’s Palermo neighborhood. In its November 7, 2024 announcement, National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14 said the autopsy attributed his death to multiple traumatic injuries and internal and external hemorrhage caused by the fall. The prosecutor’s office later reported that a 911 call came in at about 17:10. The official prosecutor’s account described the medical and investigative findings.
Who was accused, and what did prosecutors allege?
On November 7, 2024, after lifting secrecy over the investigation, prosecutors announced charges against three people and requested their questioning and arrest. A judge ordered searches and restricted the accused from leaving Argentina. Prosecutors reported nine searches. Their release described three alleged roles, but did not name the people in full: a person accompanying Payne, accused under an abandonment and drug-related theory, and two alleged cocaine suppliers, one a hotel employee and the other a supplier accused of two deliveries on October 14.
The prosecutor’s office said its investigation drew on witness statements, hotel records, forensic extraction of Payne’s phone, toxicology and other forensic work, and review of more than 800 hours of surveillance footage. Those figures and descriptions are the office’s account of its investigation, not independent findings of guilt. The November charges were allegations, not convictions. #1 Best Overall
- CREDIBLE: This test is CLIA Waived for home or over the counter (OTC) use, utilizes the same technology as lab screening tests, and its results are accepted in most professional and clinical settings.
- COMPREHENSIVE: This lab-grade test can detect 14 drugs simultaneously: Buprenorphine (BUP), Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), Opiates (OPI - 2000 ng/mL cut-off level), Amphetamine (AMP), Barbiturates (BAR), Benzodiazepines (BZO), Cocaine (COC), Methamphetamine (MET), Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), Methadone (MTD), Oxycodone (OXY), Phencyclidine (PCP), Propoxyphene (PPX), and Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA).
- ACCURATE: More than 99% accurate, it uses lab-recommended cutoff levels for each drug and includes a temperature strip to verify the temperature of the fresh sample for Specimen Validity Testing.
- EASY TO USE: To use, simply remove the cap, collect urine in the test cup, wait a FULL 5 minutes, and then read the result; disposable plastic gloves are included, a negative result shows two lines, a positive result shows only the control line, a faint test line still means negative, and results should not be read after 5 minutes.
How did the legal case change?
| Date and decision-maker | Alleged conduct and procedural action | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| November 7, 2024 — prosecutors | Three people charged; prosecutors requested questioning and arrest. A judge ordered searches and travel restrictions. | Initial allegations and investigative measures, not findings of guilt. |
| December 4, 2024 — appeals court | Reversed a lower court’s decision to decline jurisdiction. | The national criminal and correctional judiciary continued handling the case at that stage. The prosecutor’s report on the jurisdiction ruling. |
| December 2024 — first-instance judge | Five people processed: three without pretrial detention for negligent homicide, and two with pretrial detention for drug supply. | The judge’s processing ruling used a different legal characterization for the accompanying representative than the prosecution’s original charge. Processing was not a conviction. |
| February 2025 — appeals court | Confirmed processing and pretrial detention for the two alleged suppliers; dismissed the three people processed for negligent homicide. | The drug-supply cases remained active; the negligent-homicide cases against those three were dismissed. See the February 2025 appellate update. |
| April–June 2025 — prosecutor, judge and assigned oral court | Prosecutors requested an oral trial for the two supply defendants in a filing dated April 25; the judge accepted the request. The assigned national oral court declared itself incompetent on May 20 and referred the matter to Buenos Aires City jurisdiction. | A request for trial and jurisdictional referral did not establish that a trial started or resulted in a verdict. The prosecutor’s June 6, 2025 report. |
Who were the two alleged suppliers?
By the June 2025 update, prosecutors had named the two defendants as Braian Nahuel Paiz and Ezequiel David Pereyra. Prosecutor Andrés Madrea requested that each face trial over two alleged paid cocaine deliveries. The official report describes the requested charge as paid narcotics supply repeated twice for each accused. It is the prosecutor’s allegation, not a court’s finding of guilt.
The later first-instance and appellate proceedings concerned five people, not just the three in the initial announcement. The three processed for negligent homicide were Payne’s representative and two hotel managers; the two drug-supply defendants were a hotel employee and a restaurant waiter Payne had met in Buenos Aires. The appeals court dismissed the negligent-homicide cases against the first three while leaving the two supply cases active with pretrial detention. The February appellate report sets out that change in status.

What did the forensic findings say about Payne’s death?
The prosecutor’s November release said toxicology detected traces of alcohol, cocaine and a prescribed antidepressant in Payne’s body in the final period, including at least the last 72 hours. It also reported that forensic pathologists considered his injuries consistent with a fall from height and that the evidence suggested he was not fully conscious, or had substantially diminished consciousness, at the time. These are descriptions of the official investigation’s forensic record; toxicology alone does not establish that any particular accused person caused his death.
In the June 2025 report, prosecutors gave a more specific description of the autopsy and toxicology record, including alcohol, cocaine-related substances and sertraline. That report attributes the account to the prosecution’s presentation of the forensic findings.

Was anyone convicted, and did a trial happen?
The official procedural update dated June 6, 2025, did not report a conviction or say that a trial had begun. It said the prosecution’s request to send the two alleged suppliers to oral trial had been accepted, then reported that the assigned national oral court referred the case to the Buenos Aires City judiciary after declaring itself incompetent. The eventual jurisdictional resolution, trial date and disposition are not established by that update. See the June 6, 2025 status report.
