Lexie Grey, played by Chyler Leigh, dies in “Flight,” the Grey’s Anatomy season 8 finale, after the plane crash. One viewer’s account of crying on a rewatch captures a personal reaction to the scene, but it does not show how widespread or current that response is.
What happens to Lexie Grey
Lexie is Meredith Grey’s half-sister. In “Flight,” the season 8 finale, she is among the doctors caught in a plane crash. She dies from her injuries at the crash site. ABC identifies the moment as Lexie’s heartbreaking death in its official season 8 plane-crash scenes feature.
Why Chyler Leigh left the series
Leigh said she decided that season 8 would be her last. In a statement reported by TVLine on June 1, 2012, she said she met with series creator Shonda Rhimes and that they worked together to give Lexie’s story “appropriate closure.” That account describes a planned departure and collaboration—not a surprise firing or an exit made without Leigh’s involvement.
In contemporaneous coverage of the season finale, the Los Angeles Times reported Rhimes’s response to Leigh’s departure: “I love Chyler and I love the character of Lexie Grey.”

What is documented about viewers’ reactions
A fan post on Reddit titled “Second time around, still makes me cry” describes the writer rewatching Lexie’s death. It is a vivid example of one viewer’s reaction, not a survey or measure of audience sentiment. The available reporting does not establish how many viewers remain upset by the scene or whether that response has changed over time.
