The couple got together in 2012. A 2026 Us Weekly retrospective says Antonoff’s sister Rachel encouraged them to meet and that Antonoff emailed Dunham to arrange dinner. The retrospective does not establish a precise first-meeting date.

When did they break up?
The relationship ended in late 2017. In her 2026 memoir Famesick, Dunham recounts a severe fight, a pause while Antonoff toured, and says she ultimately initiated the breakup in December. That is Dunham’s retrospective account; the reporting does not establish that Antonoff independently confirmed those private details.
The breakup became public on January 8, 2018, when Pitchfork reported that representatives had confirmed the split. Dunham’s representative described it as “amicable.” This was the contemporary public statement, distinct from Dunham’s later account of the events leading up to the separation.

What did Lena Dunham say about why they split?
In later interviews, Dunham connected the ending to several circumstances rather than identifying one definitive cause. A 2025 TV Insider retrospective summarizes her February 2018 Vogue essay: she discussed health problems, Antonoff being away for work, and a sense that they were “growing slowly apart.”
The same retrospective summarizes a 2020 Cosmopolitan UK interview in which Dunham reflected that they fell in love when she was 25 and both were starting their careers. These are her explanations as reported in those publications, not proof that any single factor alone caused the breakup.
