The format puts the interior rooms and scenes on display; LEGO lead designer César Soares told Forbes that a spherical back was never part of the plan.
What the $1,000 Death Star looks like
Set 75419 is a large, open-sided diorama: its curved structure frames rooms and scenes, while the back remains open rather than enclosing the model as a sphere. LEGO’s US product listing describes compartments and a functional elevator. The scenes include the trash compactor, Leia’s holding cell, hangar control room and bay, tractor beam control, Palpatine’s throne room, and the Superlaser. StarWars.com says the set draws scenes from A New Hope, Return of the Jedi, and Rogue One.
That open format makes the interior the main display feature. It is not an incomplete build awaiting extra panels: both the official product description and the designer’s comments present the cutaway as the intended design.
Why LEGO chose a cutaway instead of a sphere
Soares, the set’s lead designer, told Forbes that the flat design was the plan from the beginning: “There was never an intention to have panels that would open up or, you know, have a sphere in the back, or a full sphere.” In other words, this is not a version of the model that LEGO later decided to leave unfinished. The team chose an interior-facing diorama rather than a closed exterior replica.

The format also reflects practical display considerations. Soares said the team wanted a small footprint for a shelf or cabinet, and dismissed wall hanging because of the model’s weight and the way it builds upward. LEGO’s product copy likewise calls out a compact foundation. The designer’s account of the structure’s engineering challenge is that “the bottom half of the circle structure was very sturdy, because that is the foundation of the entire build,” as quoted by StarWars.com.

The choice comes down to what you want the model to show. The cutaway makes recognizable interiors and scenes visible at a glance, while a fully enclosed sphere would emphasize the Death Star’s external silhouette from every direction. Soares said a full sphere was never intended for this set; the two formats serve different display priorities.

- Choose this format for: visible rooms, scene details, and the set’s large figure lineup.
- Consider the trade-off: it does not provide a complete spherical exterior, and the open back is part of the design rather than an optional configuration.
- Plan the display: LEGO and the designer describe shelf or cabinet display and a compact foundation; the designer said wall hanging was rejected because of weight and build direction.
A TIE Fighter with Imperial Hangar Rack (40771) was offered as an early gift-with-purchase, according to Soares’s interview. It is not part of the standard 75419 contents, and that offer does not establish current availability.
